Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Master Bedroom

The arrival of the local authorities shifted the energy inside the house from suffocating grief to absolute panic. Two patrol officers entered first, followed quickly by Detective Mark Miller, a veteran investigator whose calm demeanor contrasted sharply with the chaotic tension in our living room.

I knelt by my father’s wheelchair, slipping my hand beneath the cushion where his left hand had been pointing. My fingers brushed against a cold, hard piece of plastic. I pulled out a small USB flash drive and slipped it into my pocket just as Detective Miller approached us.

"Alex, what's going on here?" Miller asked, looking from the closed casket to the pale faces of my family.

"My wife didn't commit suicide," I said, my voice steady despite the agony tearing through my chest. "I want an autopsy, and I want this entire house treated as a crime scene."

"That's absurd!" my mother cried out, stepping forward with tears streaming down her cheeks. "Detective, my son is in shock. He's trying to blame his own family for Clara's tragedy. She took an overdose of sleeping pills. We found the empty bottle beside her bed."

"If it was a simple suicide, why was there an attempt to rush the burial before an official coroner's evaluation?" I shot back, turning to Aunt Beatrice.

Beatrice's eyes narrowed. "I was only trying to spare the family additional pain, Alex. The death certificate was signed by Dr. Evans."

"Dr. Evans is your husband's cousin," I noted coldly.

Detective Miller raised a hand to restore order. "Everyone stay where you are. Nobody leaves this floor. Sergeant, secure the perimeter and call the state forensic team."

Miller then turned to me and gestured toward the staircase. "Alex, walk me through what you know."

We walked up the stairs, followed closely by a forensic officer. Every step felt like walking through lead. The air on the third floor smelled faintly of lavender and metallic copper—a scent that sent a chill straight down my spine.

When we reached the master bedroom, the door was slightly off its hinges. The lock plate was bent, clearly showing signs of forced entry.

"My daughter said Derek kicked this door open," I said, pointing to the damaged frame.

Detective Miller carefully pushed the door open with a gloved hand. The room was unnaturally tidy, almost scrubbed clean, but the subtle evidence of a struggle remained. A floor lamp was positioned awkwardly near the wardrobe, its shade crooked. On the hardwood floor near the foot of the bed, a deep scratch mark spanned two feet—as if a heavy piece of furniture had been dragged across the room to block the door.

"Look at the bedpost," the forensic officer remarked, pointing a flashlight at the dark oak post.

There, clinging to a splintered edge of the wood, were several strands of dark brown hair and a tiny scrap of green silk matching the scarf I had bought for Clara.

I knelt down, my hands trembling as I reached out toward the fabric, but Miller held me back. "Don't touch it, Alex. Let the tech document it."

"She fought," I whispered, tears finally breaking through my resolve. "She didn't take pills. She was fighting someone in this room."

"We need to examine the body properly," Miller said grimly. He spoke into his radio, ordering the transport of Clara's casket to the county morgue for a full forensic autopsy.

Downstairs, the announcement of the coroner's intervention triggered an immediate response. My brother Derek suddenly made a break for the side exit leading to the garage. But two officers stationed outside tackled him to the grass before he could reach his truck.

"Let go of me!" Derek screamed, wrestling against the handcuffs. "I didn't do anything! It was Mom's idea!"

My mother gasped, clutching her chest. "Derek, shut your mouth!"

"She's lying!" Derek yelled, his face flush with desperation. "She told me Clara was going to destroy the family business! She said Clara found the offshore accounts!"

The words hung heavy in the evening air. The peaceful facade of the Sterling family had shattered completely, revealing a labyrinth of greed, betrayal, and dark secrets that went far deeper than a tragic death.
