Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Empire

The court hearing was only the first falling domino. Once the judicial investigation into Teresa Aranda’s financial dealings began, the state prosecutor's office stepped in.

It turned out that my lawyer's evidence was just the tip of the iceberg. Teresa had been cooking the books of the Aranda Family Corporation for over a decade, hiding millions in offshore tax havens to cover up failed real estate investments made by her brothers. The public humiliation she had planned for me at Lucía’s birthday party had unintentionally pointed a massive spotlight directly at her own illegal operations.

Within three months, the news broke across every major financial outlet: Aranda Enterprises Facing Criminal Indictment for Tax Fraud and Wire Fraud.

The scandal completely ruined the family’s social standing. Paulina Mier’s father immediately broke off all business ties with Teresa, publicly distance his family from the Arandas to protect his own wealth. Paulina herself stopped answering Rodrigo's calls, abandoning him the moment it became clear he would no longer inherit a vast empire.

Rodrigo’s world completely collapsed. Without his mother’s money and without the corporate title he had inherited, he was forced to sell his luxury house in the gated district to cover his mounting legal fees.

One afternoon, during his weekly supervised visitation with Lucía at the community center, I sat in the corner, watching him try to play with our daughter.

Lucía was now fourteen months old, walking with confident, toddling steps, her bright blue eyes shining with life and joy. Rodrigo sat on a foam mat, holding a plastic fire truck, trying to get her attention. But Lucía didn't know him well. She looked at him with polite curiosity, then turned around and ran back to me, hiding behind my legs and giggling.

Rodrigo sank to the floor, resting his forehead against his knees.

"She doesn't even know who I am, Daniela," he sobbed quietly.

I looked down at him. Part of me, the part that had loved him when we were young and idealist, felt a tinge of sorrow. But the mother in me knew that actions have permanent consequences.

"She knows who loves her, Rodrigo," I said gently. "Children don't care about family names, or brown eyes, or country club memberships. They only know safety. And you made our home unsafe."

"My mother is facing five years in prison," Rodrigo whispered, looking up at me with red-rimmed eyes. "The firm is bankrupt. I had to take a job as a mid-level manager at an insurance agency. I have nothing left."

"You have a chance to rebuild your life," I told him, keeping my voice firm. "If you want to be in Lucía’s life, you need to stop being Teresa’s son and start being a man. Pay your child support. Do your visitation hours. Show up consistently, without excuses."

He wiped his eyes and looked at Lucía, who was now playing with a set of wooden blocks near my feet.

"Do you think... do you think you could ever forgive me?" he asked, his voice trembling with faint hope.

I looked at him for a long moment.

"I forgive you for being weak, Rodrigo," I said honestly. "But I will never trust you with my heart again. We are finished. But for Lucía’s sake, I hope you become someone she can be proud of one day."

He closed his eyes and nodded slowly, accepting the cold reality of the boundary I had drawn. He had lost his wife, his fortune, and his legacy—all because he lacked the courage to stand up for the truth.
