Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

Two weeks after the disaster at the country club, the first preliminary hearing for our custody and divorce proceedings took place in a high-rise courtroom downtown.

Teresa arrived with an army of attorneys, all dressed in bespoke suits, carrying leather briefcases stuffed with motion filings. She wore a severe dark grey dress, her face a mask of cold arrogance. She didn't look at me once as we entered the courtroom. Beside her sat Rodrigo, looking hollow and pale, flanked by Paulina Mier’s father, who was attending as a "family advisor."

My legal representation consisted of Sofía Vance and her junior associate. On the bench sat Judge Evelyn Martinez, a woman known for her zero-tolerance policy toward high-society theatrics.

Teresa’s lead attorney, a man named Henderson, stood up first, adopting an air of practiced authority.

"Your Honor," Henderson began, gesturing grandly, "we are requesting an immediate temporary custody order placing the minor child, Lucía Aranda, in the primary care of her father, Rodrigo Aranda, and her paternal grandmother, Teresa Aranda. We believe the mother, Daniela Salgado, exhibits signs of severe emotional instability, as evidenced by her bizarre and disruptive behavior at a private family event, where she made unfounded accusations and produced falsified financial documents to slander the Aranda family."

Judge Martinez didn't look impressed. She shifted her gaze to Sofía. "Ms. Vance, your response?"

Sofía stood up smoothly, opening a thin blue folder. "Your Honor, we reject every claim made by opposing counsel. Furthermore, we wish to present certified evidence that directly refutes the petitioner's claims of 'unfounded accusations.'"

Sofía approached the bench and handed Judge Martinez a set of certified bank statements, email transcripts, and audio recordings.

"What is the nature of these documents?" Judge Martinez asked, reviewing the pages with sharp, analytical eyes.

"Those documents," Sofía stated clearly, "demonstrate that Mrs. Teresa Aranda has spent the last six months systematically transferring assets out of the Aranda Family Trust into personal accounts managed by Paulina Mier. More importantly, Exhibit C includes an audio recording of Mrs. Teresa Aranda explicitly offering financial kickbacks to a medical consultant if he would produce a fraudulent DNA report declaring that Rodrigo Aranda was not the biological father of Lucía."

A loud gasp echoed across the court gallery.

Teresa stood up, her face turning purple. "That is an outright lie! That recording is a fake!"

"Sit down, Mrs. Aranda," Judge Martinez warned, pointing a pen at her. "Or I will have you removed for contempt."

Rodrigo turned to his mother, his eyes wide with horror. "Mom... you tried to fake a DNA test?"

"Quiet, Rodrigo!" Teresa snapped, losing her composure entirely. "She’s setting us up!"

"I am not setting anyone up," I said, speaking up for the first time, my voice calm and clear. "I simply recorded the phone call you made to Dr. Harrison at the central clinic. The call where you offered him fifty thousand dollars to swap my daughter’s swab sample."

The courtroom was dead silent. Even Henderson, Teresa’s lead attorney, slowly closed his binder and took a step away from his client. He was a corporate lawyer, not a conspirator in a fraud scheme, and he knew when a case was completely lost.

Judge Martinez slammed her gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

"This court finds the evidence presented by the respondent deeply concerning," Judge Martinez declared. "Pending a full investigation by law enforcement into potential fraud and forgery, primary physical custody of Lucía Aranda will remain exclusively with the mother, Daniela Salgado. The father, Rodrigo Aranda, will be permitted supervised visitation for two hours a week at a court-designated facility."

"Supervised?" Rodrigo choked out. "Your Honor, I am her father!"

"And you allowed your family to engage in a conspiracy to delegitimize your own child," Judge Martinez said coldly. "You are lucky I am allowing visitation at all. Court is adjourned."

As we walked out of the courtroom, Teresa lunged toward me in the hallway, her fingers clawing at the air.

"You took everything from us!" she screamed, her grand composure completely shattered into ugly hysteria. "You were nothing! A nobody from a dirty little apartment!"

May you like

I stopped, looked her dead in the eye, and smiled softly.

"I may have come from a small apartment, Teresa," I whispered so only she could hear. "But at least my family built their lives on love. Yours built theirs on lies. And look how quickly it fell apart."
