Chapter 10 - A New Beginning

A year later, the Kansas winter had faded into a bright, warm spring.
Corinne had sold the old house. It held too many dark memories, too many ghosts of betrayal. With the stolen funds recovered and her promotion secured, she had bought a beautiful farmhouse on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by acres of green grass and tall oak trees.
It was a Saturday afternoon. The sun was shining brightly, casting a golden glow over the back porch. Corinne sat in a rocking chair, sipping iced tea, listening to the sound of laughter echoing from the yard.
Casey, now five years old, was running through the sprinklers, her joyful giggles filling the air. The dark circles under the little girl's eyes were gone. The fear and anxiety that had plagued her a year ago had completely melted away, replaced by the vibrant, carefree spirit of a child who knew she was profoundly safe and endlessly loved.
Aunt Miriam sat in the chair next to Corinne, watching Casey chase a butterfly.
"She looks so happy," Miriam smiled, patting Corinne's hand.
"We both are," Corinne replied.
Casey suddenly stopped, spotting her mother on the porch. The little girl's face lit up with a brilliant, gap-toothed smile. She abandoned the butterfly and sprinted across the wet grass, holding her little teddy bear—the same one Corinne had brought back from her deployment—tightly in one hand.
"Mommy!" Casey yelled, bounding up the wooden steps.
She threw herself into Corinne's arms. There was no hesitation, no fear, no rehearsed lines. Only pure, unconditional love. Corinne wrapped her arms tightly around her daughter, burying her face in Casey's wet, sun-warmed hair, breathing in the scent of grass and sunshine.

"I love you, Mommy," Casey whispered, squeezing her tight.
"I love you too, my sweet girl," Corinne whispered back, smiling as tears of absolute joy pricked her eyes. "More than anything in the whole world. We're home."
