Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

My mother stepped in front of me, shielding me with her body despite her own trembling frame. "Let him go, Thomas. It's over. We have the files. Detective Vance has copies of everything already."
My father let out a harsh, barking laugh that echoed off the mahogany walls. "Detective Vance? You think some mid-level cop can touch me? I own half the people in the DA's office! You really thought you could outsmart me?" He took a slow, menacing step forward, his eyes fixed on the canvas bag in my mother's hands. "Hand over the bag, Helen. Right now. Or I swear to God, I'll finish what I started on Monday night."
"No!" I yelled, stepping around my mother. I gripped the plastic case of flash drives tightly in my hand. "You're done! You're going to prison for everything!"
With a roar of fury, my father lunged forward, grabbing my mother by the arm and flinging her aside. She crashed hard against the corner of the heavy oak desk, letting out a sharp cry of pain as she slumped to the floor.
"Mom!" I screamed, lunging toward her.
Before I could reach her, my father grabbed me by the collar of my shirt, hoisting me off my feet with terrifying strength. His face was twisted into a mask of pure rage, all pretense of civilization completely stripped away.
"You ungrateful little parasite," he snarled, raising his fist back. "I should have broken you years ago!"
BANG! BANG! BANG!
A loud, thunderous pounding echoed from the front door of the house, followed by the sound of heavy boots kicking against wood.
"Police! Open the door! Federal warrant! FBI and Local PD!"
My father froze, his fist hovering in the air. For a split second, confusion flashed across his face, quickly replaced by sheer panic. He dropped me to the floor, stumbling backward as he reached into his jacket for his phone.
"Stay right where you are, Thomas Miller!"
The office door flew open with a tremendous crash, splintering the lock completely. Detective Vance stepped into the room, flanked by two uniformed officers and federal agents with badges gleaming under the bright lights.
My father’s hands flew up instinctively, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as he tried to find his voice, to spin his usual web of lies.
"I... I am a respectable citizen! This is private property! They broke into my safe!"
"Thomas Miller, you are under arrest for domestic abuse, extortion, corporate embezzlement, and bribery of public officials," Detective Vance announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

The federal agents swarmed forward, pinning my father against the mahogany desk and clicking the steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists. He thrashed and shouted, cursing our names as they dragged him out of the room, his voice fading down the hallway until the front door slammed shut behind him.
Silence settled over the office—a silence that felt, for the first time in my life, completely safe.
