Chapter 5 - The Secret Alliance

The next three days were a waking nightmare. Locked inside my bedroom with only the fading sunlight through the window to mark the passage of time, I felt the suffocating grip of despair closing around my throat. My mother managed to sneak a piece of dry toast and a glass of water up to me once a day, but she looked ghost-like, hollowed out by the sheer terror of what was coming.

"We have to run," I whispered fiercely on the third night as she unlocked my bedroom door to collect the empty glass. "We can't wait for them to come back. We have to leave tonight while he's asleep."

My mother shook her head slowly, a look of profound defeat in her eyes. "Where would we go, Leo? We have no money. He froze all my accounts years ago. Every bank card I touch alerts his phone. If we run without a plan, he will track us down within twelve hours. And when he catches us... the punishment won't just be a beating. He'll destroy us completely."

She was right. We were trapped in a gilded cage with a warden who held all the keys.

As she turned to leave, a soft tap sounded against my bedroom window.

We both froze. My heart leaped into my throat. The window was on the second floor; nobody could reach it without a ladder.

Another tap, followed by a faint scratching sound.

Stepping cautiously over the creaky floorboards, I crept toward the window and pulled back the blinds. Peering through the glass, I saw a familiar face illuminated by the pale moonlight.

It was Maya.

She was standing on the top rung of a tall aluminum extension ladder propped up against the side of the house, balancing precariously in the cool night air. She pressed her palm against the glass, signaling me to open it.

My hands shook as I unlocked the window latch and pushed it upward, letting in a rush of cool night breeze.

"Maya? What the hell are you doing here?" I hissed, my voice trembling. "Are you insane? If my dad sees you—"

"Quiet!" Maya whispered back, her breath pluming in the cold air. She carefully slid her legs over the windowsill and dropped lightly onto my bedroom floor. My mother gasped, backing away in alarm, but Maya held up her hands in a placating gesture. "Mrs. Miller, I'm Maya. I'm Leo's classmate. My brother is Detective Vance. He sent me."

My mother stared at her, wide-eyed. "Detective Vance? The police?"

"Not regular cops—specialized internal investigators," Maya corrected urgently, pulling a small, encrypted burner phone out of her jacket pocket and handing it to me. "My brother has been tracking your father's business dealings for months. It turns out your dad isn't just an abusive husband; he's been embezzling funds from his company and bribing local municipal inspectors to cover up building code violations. The domestic abuse is the thread that unravels the whole sweater."

I stared at the burner phone in my hand as if it were a live grenade. "He... he's embezzling?"

"Embezzlement, fraud, bribery," Maya rattled off quickly, glancing nervously toward the hallway door. "My brother has a federal warrant ready to sign, but he needs two things: direct testimony from you, Leo, and physical evidence from inside the house—bank statements, ledger books, or medical records that your father keeps locked in his home office safe. If we get those before the multi-agency review next week, your dad goes away for a very, very long time. And he won't be able to buy his way out."

May you like

My mother’s breath hitched. She looked at the phone, then at me, a mixture of terror and desperate hope warring across her bruised features.

"The safe code," my mother whispered, her eyes widening. "I... I know where he keeps the combination."
