Chapter 9 - The Birthday That Belonged to Lily

One year to the day after the infamous dog party, our household was buzzing with an entirely different kind of energy.

The living room was decorated with streamers, balloons, and a massive banner that read: HAPPY 9TH BIRTHDAY, LILY!

There was no champagne cart, no professional photographer livestreaming for strangers, and absolutely no diamond collars for animals. Instead, the house was filled with the sound of eight of Lily’s closest school friends laughing, playing games, and running around the backyard with ice cream sundaes and cupcakes frosted in bright blue and pink.

Lily stood by the dining table, wearing a sparkly birthday crown and blowing out the nine bright candles on a custom chocolate cake decorated with her favorite cartoon characters.

As everyone cheered and clapped, Lily looked across the room and caught my eye.

She didn't look sad. She didn't look like she was wondering if she was worth less than an animal. Her face glowed with absolute, unconditional joy, radiant and secure in the knowledge that she was cherished, protected, and deeply loved.

She walked over to me during a break in the party, holding a slice of cake on a proper ceramic plate.

"Mommy," she said softly, smiling up at me. "Do you want a bite of my birthday cake?"

I knelt down, meeting her level gaze, my heart overflowing with a warmth that words could never fully capture.

May you like

"I would love a bite, baby," I said, taking a small piece from her plate. "It's the best cake in the world."

Lily grinned, her eyes bright and clear, before running back outside to join her friends in the sunshine.
