Chapter 8 - A New Chapter

Six months flew by with a quiet grace I had never known was possible.

The divorce was finalized with surprising speed. David, facing the overwhelming weight of financial ruin and the threat of criminal exposure for his role in the trust forgery, signed away his custody rights in exchange for a clean break and a modest severance to clear his personal debts. He vanished into the background of the city, a cautionary tale of what happens when a parasite loses its host.

My parents, forced to downscale drastically, had moved into a small, nondescript apartment on the far side of town. Without my monthly ten-thousand-dollar infusions, my father’s fake consulting firm collapsed entirely, and my mother was forced—for the first time in her adult life—to apply for a part-time job at a local department store. Brooke, stripped of her luxury lifestyle and designer wardrobe, had lost her influencer following almost overnight, her social media channels reduced to ghost towns of inactive links and mocking comments.

They tried once to ambush us at a local grocery store, my mother rushing toward us with theatrical tears while my father stood behind her looking bitter and defeated.

"Emma! Please, have mercy on your own flesh and blood!" my mother cried, reaching out a manicured hand that trembled slightly. "We're living in squalor! Your father's health is failing! How can you be so cruel to your family?"

Lily instinctively stepped behind me, her small hand gripping the hem of my jacket. But she didn't cower, and her eyes weren't filled with the desperate confusion of that night by the trash can. She looked at them with quiet, confident detachment.

I didn't yell. I didn't argue. I simply looked past them as if they were complete strangers.

"Excuse us," I said calmly, stepping around them with Lily at my side. "We have places to be."

We walked out into the crisp autumn sunshine, getting into our car without looking back once.
