Chapter 3 - The Interrogation at the Gate

Twelve hours later, thousands of miles away across the Pacific Ocean, the tropical paradise of Honolulu turned into a nightmare for Dennis and Trisha Stanley.
Flight HA 45 had just taxied to the gate at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Passengers unbuckled their seatbelts, grabbing overhead luggage and chatting excitedly about the sunshine and beaches awaiting them. Dennis stood up first, sliding his designer sunglasses onto the bridge of his nose, while Trisha checked her reflection in her compact mirror, smoothing her expensive linen blouse.
"I still can't believe the old man ruined our first day," Trisha muttered, snapping her compact shut with an annoyed click. "Calling the police over a minor household disciplinary issue? Your father has finally lost his mind, Dennis."
"Relax, Trish," Dennis replied, flashing a confident, dismissive smile. "It's just a misunderstanding. Dad has always been overly dramatic about child-rearing. We'll call him from the Uber, smooth things over, and tell the cops we were just teaching her boundaries. Everything is under control."
They stepped out into the jet bridge, walking shoulder-to-shoulder with the relaxed entitlement of people who believed rules applied only to the lower classes.
As they entered the main terminal, two towering police officers in dark tactical vests stepped directly into their path. Behind them stood an agent from the Honolulu Police Department's special victims unit.
"Dennis Stanley?" the lead officer asked, his voice entirely devoid of warmth.
Dennis paused, adjusting his collar with a condescending chuckle. "Yes? Look, officer, if this is about the noise complaint back in Portland, it's completely blown out of proportion—"
Before he could finish, the officer grabbed Dennis’s arms, jerked them behind his back, and slammed cold steel handcuffs around his wrists with a metallic snap.
"Hey! What the hell are you doing?!" Dennis shrieked, stumbling forward as his sunglasses slid down his nose and clattered onto the terminal floor. "Do you know who I am? I am a senior financial analyst! This is an outrage! Trisha, tell them!"
Trisha stepped back, her face draining of all color as she raised her hands defensively. "Don't look at me! I had nothing to do with it! This is all his fault—his crazy father, his bastard child—I didn't even want her in the house!"
The female officer stepped forward, grabbing Trisha’s wrists and securing them with a second pair of cuffs. "Trisha Stanley, you are under arrest for kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, child abuse, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent..."
"No! No, you can't do this!" Trisha wailed, her pristine vacation facade shattering instantly as nearby tourists stopped to stare and record the scene on their phones. "My nails! You're ruining my designer bag! Dennis, do something!"

Dennis was pale, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as reality finally crashed down upon him. "My dad," he stammered, his voice cracking with panic. "My dad called you, didn't he? He set us up."
"Your father saved a five-year-old child from dying of dehydration in a locked attic," the detective replied coldly, turning them both toward the terminal exit. "You're going back to Portland, Mr. Stanley. And this time, you won't be flying first class."
