Chapter 10 - The Sunflowers Bloom

Years passed, seasons turned, and the scars of the past slowly faded into memory, replaced by the beautiful rhythm of a real family.
Sophie grew into a bright, confident, and extraordinarily kind young girl. She excelled in school, joined the local art club, and loved spending her weekends helping Rosa bake pastries in the kitchen and tending to our ever-expanding garden in the backyard.
Every June 3rd—the anniversary of the day we found her in the attic—we didn't mourn or look backward with bitterness. Instead, we celebrated what we called "New Life Day." We baked a cake, invited Rosa and close friends over, and planted new flowers in the garden as a symbol of resilience and hope.
One warm afternoon, as I sat on the front porch sipping coffee and watching Sophie ride her bicycle down the Maple Street sidewalk, the mail carrier walked up the steps and handed me a thick envelope.
I opened it and scanned the official letterhead from the state corrections department.
Dennis had written a letter.
It was short, written on cheap lined paper with shaking handwriting. He spoke of remorse, of regret, and of the agonizing realization of what he had thrown away. He asked for nothing—not forgiveness, not a visit, not even a reply. Just a confession of a broken man finally waking up to the reality of his own actions.
I folded the letter neatly, walked over to the small chiminea on the back patio, and dropped it into the flickering flames, watching it turn to ash and drift away on the breeze.
I didn't need the letter. I didn't need the apologies, nor did I harbor any lingering anger. Hatred was too heavy a burden to carry, and my hands were already full holding something far more precious.
"Grandpa! Look how fast I can go!" Sophie called out, whizzing past the blooming yellow sunflowers with her hair trailing behind her in the golden sunlight, laughing with absolute freedom.
May you like
I smiled, standing up from my chair and raising my hand to wave at her.
"I see you, sweetheart!" I called back, my heart brimming with a deep, unbreakable peace. "Keep going!"
