Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Boardroom

The entire room went dead silent.

Marcus stood up slowly, his six-foot-two frame imposing and immovable, his eyes locking onto Brandon with cold authority. “Mr. Whitaker, you are trespassing in a private legal office. If you do not turn around and walk out right now, I will have security remove you and slap you with a restraining order before you reach the elevators.”

Brandon stopped short, chest heaving, glaring at Marcus before shifting his venomous gaze back to me.

“Martha, tell him to back off!” Brandon shouted, ignoring Marcus entirely. “Look at what you’re doing to your own daughter! Claire has been crying for twenty-four hours straight because you’ve frozen our accounts, threatened our home, and now you’re trying to destroy my company! What kind of mother are you?”

I didn't flinch. I slowly set my pen down on the table, folded my hands over my portfolio, and looked up at him with absolute calm.

“I am the mother who spent three years funding your lifestyle while you treated me like an inconvenience in my own home,” I said, my voice cutting through his shouting like a scalpel. “I am the woman who watched you isolate my daughter, belittle her accomplishments, and finally, on Christmas Day, had the supreme arrogance to tell me I couldn't sit at my own table.”

Claire stepped forward from the doorway, her eyes swollen and red, her hands trembling as she clutched her coat around her.

“Mom... please,” Claire choked out, her voice breaking into a sob. “Brandon made a mistake. He was stressed about the business. He didn't mean it like that—he was just trying to impress his mother. Can’t we just talk about this at home? Not here, not in a lawyer’s office with lawyers and lawsuits...”

“Claire, look at him,” I said softly, gesturing toward Brandon, who was already pacing back and forth behind her, muttering obscenities under his breath about ungrateful in-laws. “Look at how he speaks to me, look at how he treats your future, and look at how he has manipulated every dollar you and I have ever worked for.”

“She’s right, Claire,” Marcus added gently, stepping closer. “Your husband’s company isn't just stressed—it’s insolvent. He’s been hiding massive debts from you for over a year. If Martha hadn’t cut off that credit line, you and your children would have lost your home anyway when the creditors seized everything in February.”

Brandon whirled around, his face twisting in blind panic. “Shut up! Shut your mouth, old man! You don't know anything about my business! It’s a temporary liquidity crunch! We just need funding, and Martha has the money—she’s just being a selfish, vindictive old hag—”

Before Brandon could finish his sentence, the conference room door opened again. This time, it was two building security guards accompanied by Chloe, their expressions all business.

“Mr. Whitaker,” the lead guard said firmly, stepping between Brandon and the table. “You’ve been asked to leave the premises. Step outside, or we’ll assist you.”

Brandon glared around the room, realizing he had lost all control. He looked at Claire, expecting her to follow him blindly, but Claire stood frozen near the door, her shoulders slumped, her gaze fixed on the floor.

“Fine!” Brandon snarled, jabbing a finger in my direction. “You’ll regret this, Martha. All of you. I’ll sue you for every penny you’ve got. You haven't seen the last of me!”

With that, he turned on his heel and stormed out, the security guards trailing closely behind him to ensure he exited the building.
