Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm at the Office

The next morning, the crisp winter sun reflected brightly off the glass facade of Vance & Sterling Law Offices downtown. I walked through the heavy mahogany doors right at 8:55 AM, wearing my favorite charcoal wool coat and carrying my leather portfolio.
The receptionist, a sharp young woman named Chloe who had known me for years, greeted me with an immediate smile. “Good morning, Martha. Mr. Vance is waiting for you in Conference Room B. He has your files pulled up.”
“Thank you, Chloe.”
When I stepped into the conference room, Marcus stood up from the polished oak table, shaking my hand firmly. Seated beside him was a younger attorney with keen, intelligent eyes—Sarah Lin, one of the firm’s top litigation and asset-protection specialists.
“Martha, thank you for coming in on such short notice,” Marcus said, gesturing to a comfortable leather armchair. “Sarah has been reviewing the mortgage note on Brandon and Claire’s townhouse, as well as the subsidiary ledger you sent over yesterday.”
Sarah adjusted her glasses, sliding a printed document across the table toward me. “Mrs. Holloway, your position is exceptionally strong. Because the secondary mortgage note was drawn up as a demand note with clear default triggers—specifically including failure to maintain financial solvency or misuse of supplemental credit lines—you have every legal right to call the loan immediately.”
“And what about Brandon’s expected retaliation?” I asked, opening my portfolio to take notes. “He’s not going to walk away quietly. His ego won’t allow it.”
“Oh, he’s already tried,” Sarah smiled, a sharp, confident expression. “Our office received three aggressive voicemails from him this morning, claiming elder abuse, financial coercion, and demanding an immediate injunction to restore his credit lines. He even threatened to sue you for emotional distress.”
Marcus let out a deep, booming laugh that rattled the windowpanes. “Classic Brandon. Try to bully the person holding the keys when he realizes he’s trapped in a corner.”
“What did you tell him?” I asked.
“We didn't call him back,” Sarah said smoothly. “Instead, we sent a formal notice of default via certified mail to his townhouse, giving him exactly thirty days to clear the outstanding balance of one hundred and forty-two thousand dollars or face immediate foreclosure proceedings on the property. Furthermore, we notified his business partners at Apex Digital that your financial backing has been officially severed.”
Before I could respond, the conference room door burst open without a knock.
Chloe stood in the doorway, looking slightly flustered, while behind her, a furious figure pushed past.
It was Brandon.

His face was bright red, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his designer winter coat half-zipped. Behind him, looking equally panicked and disheveled, stood Claire.
“You old witch!” Brandon roared, marching straight toward the conference table before Marcus and Sarah could step between us. “You’re actually trying to ruin me! You sent a foreclosure notice to my house on the day after Christmas? Are you completely out of your mind?!”
