Chapter 9 - Building Our Legacy

Summer arrived with long, lazy afternoons spent in our backyard. We had planted a small vegetable garden near the fence—tomatoes, cucumbers, and a patch of bright red strawberries that Lily monitored with the dedication of a seasoned agricultural expert.
I had converted the basement—the one in my house—into a bright, sprawling workshop and recreation room, complete with a pool table, a craft station for Lily, and a massive bookcase filled with adventure novels for Drew. Whenever we went down the stairs, the lights clicked on instantly, flooding the room with warm, golden illumination. The past had lost its power to haunt us.
One evening, as we sat on the back porch eating homemade strawberry shortcake, Drew looked out across the lawn where the fireflies were beginning to blink in the twilight.
"Uncle—Dad," Drew corrected himself with a shy smile, "can we visit Dad’s grave this weekend? I want to tell him about the soccer game."
My heart swelled. "We would love that, Drew. We can bring some fresh flowers from the garden."
"Can I bring a strawberry for him too?" Lily asked earnestly. "He’d like strawberries, right?"

"I think he’d love that more than anything, sweetie," I replied, pulling them both close as the evening breeze rustled through the oak trees overhead.
We had survived the worst that human cruelty could offer, but love, resilience, and an unbreakable bond had brought us into the light. The journey had been harrowing, but our story was no longer defined by where we had been—it was defined by where we were going together.
