Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Tomorrow

Spring returned to the city with a rush of green buds and warm afternoon breezes. A year had passed since the day Drew dragged himself up my porch steps with Lily clinging to his shirt.

The transformation was nothing short of miraculous.

Drew was no longer the hyper-vigilant, silent boy who flinched at sudden noises. He played soccer in the neighborhood league, his right leg showing no lingering weakness from the old fracture. He still checked on Lily—that protective instinct was part of who he was—but now it manifested in sweet, brotherly ways, like making sure she packed her favorite juice box for school or helping her tie her sneakers.

Lily had blossomed into a chatty, bright four-year-old who loved drawing pictures of our family—three stick figures under a massive, smiling yellow sun, labeled with bold, childish letters: Uncle, Drew, Lily.

On a sunny Saturday in May, Marcus Vance arrived at our house with a thick manila envelope and a bottle of sparkling cider.

"Official business," Marcus announced with a wide grin as he sat at our kitchen table. "The final adoption paperwork has been fully processed and approved by the state family court."

I looked at the documents bearing the official court seal. My name was now permanently, legally recorded as their adoptive father.

"Does this mean you're officially our dad now?" Drew asked, looking up from his sketchbook with wide, hopeful eyes.

I set the papers down and knelt in front of him, taking both of his hands in mine.

"It means," I said, my voice thick with emotion, "that I chose you, and you chose me. We are a family, legally and forever. Nobody is ever taking you away from this house."

Lily dropped her crayon, scrambled off her chair, and launched herself directly into my arms, nearly tackling me backward onto the kitchen floor. Drew joined in a second later, wrapping his arms around my neck.

I held them both tight, breathing in the scent of sunshine and fresh laundry, knowing that the dark basement and the cold shadows of the past were finally behind us forever.
