Chapter 4 - The Hidden Compartment

That night, sleep was impossible. While Nathan stayed in the guest room down the hall and Lily slept peacefully in her room, I sat in the dark on our master bed, staring at the walk-in closet door.

Rachel had said she was retrieving items from the back of my closet. I had lived in this house for seven years, and I thought I knew every inch of it. What could possibly be in there that I had missed?

Unable to sit still any longer, I got up, flipped on the overhead closet light, and began pulling everything off the back shelves. Winter coats, luggage sets, boxes of old college textbooks—I dragged them all out onto the bedroom floor, clearing the back wall completely.

I dropped to my knees and began pressing my hands along the cedar paneling at the base of the back wall. For several minutes, I found nothing but smooth wood. But then, as I pushed firmly against a knot in the timber near the floorboard, a faint clicking sound echoed through the small space.

A panel roughly twelve inches wide sprang forward half an inch.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I inserted my fingertips into the gap and pulled the wooden panel away. Behind it was a dark, recessed cavity built directly into the wall framing.

Inside sat a heavy, fireproof metal lockbox.

I pulled the lockbox out into the light. It was unlocked. My hands shook as I lifted the heavy lid.

It was empty, save for a layer of fine dust and a few stray fragments of brittle, aged paper lingering at the bottom. Someone had recently emptied it. Rachel had been coming here to extract whatever was stored inside this wall.

I picked up one of the tiny fragments of paper and held it up to the light. It was discolored with age, bearing faint, handwritten blue ink. I recognized the distinct, elegant cursive script immediately.

It was my grandmother’s handwriting.

My breath caught in my throat. My grandmother had passed away fifteen years ago, and her estate had been completely destroyed in a tragic county courthouse fire that burned down her town's archives decades before. All of our family's heirlooms, original deeds, and personal memoirs were believed to have been lost forever in that blaze.

Why were pieces of my grandmother’s writing hidden in a secret wall compartment inside my closet? How had Nathan gotten them? And why hire a private researcher to take them away in secret?

I sat on the closet floor in the middle of the night, holding the tiny scrap of paper, completely overwhelmed by confusion. The mystery had deepened far beyond a simple suspicion of infidelity. Tomorrow, I was going to get the truth, no matter what it took.
