Chapter 1 - The Woman with My House Key

MY SIX-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER POINTED AT A STRANGER AND SAID, “MOMMY, THAT’S THE LADY WHO GOES INTO YOUR BEDROOM”—THEN SHE ADDED ONE THING MY HUSBAND NEVER WANTED ME TO HEAR
I was waiting in line at a pharmacy when my six-year-old daughter suddenly grabbed my sleeve.
“Mommy, look!”
I followed Lily’s finger.
A woman stood near the greeting cards.
Mid-thirties.
Brown hair.
Gray sweater.
Someone I had never seen before.
Then Lily said:
“That’s the lady who comes to our house when you’re working.”
My stomach dropped.
“What lady?”
“The one Daddy lets inside.”
I stared at her.
My husband, Nathan, and I had been married for eleven years.
I had never seriously suspected him of cheating.
Then Lily added:
“She goes into your bedroom.”
Everything inside me went cold.
The woman turned.
She saw me.
And the shopping bag slipped from her hand.
She knew exactly who I was.
I walked toward her.
“My name is Sarah Bennett.”
Her face went pale.
“I know.”
That answer was worse than anything I expected.
“How do you know my husband?”
She glanced at Lily.
“Not here.”
“Why do you have a key to my house?”
Her eyes widened.
Before she could answer, Lily said:
“Daddy gave it to her.”
I looked at my daughter.
Then Lily added, completely innocently:
“Daddy says I’m not supposed to tell you when Rachel comes over.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
I felt something inside my marriage break.
Not because I knew Nathan was having an affair.
I didn’t.
But my husband had asked our six-year-old child to keep a secret from me.
Rachel whispered:
“Sarah… Nathan told me you knew I was coming.”
I looked directly at her.
“I didn’t.”

That was when Rachel became afraid too.
Continue to Part 2 to discover why Rachel had been secretly entering Sarah’s bedroom—and why Nathan needed his own daughter to keep those visits hidden.
