Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Empire

On Monday morning at 9:00 AM, the federal authorities descended upon the corporate headquarters of Mayfield Enterprises in downtown Charleston.

Dozens of agents in tactical gear and windbreakers bearing the letters "IRS-CI" and "FBI" streamed into the glass tower, seizing computers, filing cabinets, and servers.

At the same time, Everett Mayfield was arrested at his historic estate.

The local news broadcasted the footage live. I watched it from the cozy living room of a rented cottage on the coast of Folly Beach, where Lila and I had relocated.

The television screen showed Everett, handcuffed, his face contorted in a mask of pure, impotent rage as he was led down the stone steps of his mansion by federal marshals. He looked frail, stripped of his expensive suits and his grand leather chair.

Beside me, the landline phone rang. It was Victoria.

"It's done," she said, her voice remarkably calm, almost peaceful. "I’ve officially signed the plea agreement. I will receive probation and community service, but my family's reputation is gone. Everett’s assets have been completely frozen."

"Are you okay, Victoria?" I asked.

"I’ve never felt lighter, Natalie," she admitted, a soft chuckle escaping her lips. "And... there’s someone here who wants to speak to you."

There was a brief pause, the sound of the phone being passed, and then a deep, warm voice came through the line.

"Natalie?"

My eyes filled with tears. "Julian?"

"Hey, little sister," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "My mother called me. She told me everything. She told me what you did... for me, and for your daughter."

"I did it for all of us, Julian," I said, wiping a tear from my cheek. "Your father tried to silence everyone. He tried to make us believe we were small."

"Well, he failed," Julian said, his voice ringing with strength. "I'm boarding a flight to Charleston tonight. I want to meet my niece. And I think I owe her a music lesson."

"She’s waiting for you, Julian," I said. "We both are."
