Chapter 6 - The Matriarch's Surrender

At exactly 9:55 AM the next morning, a sleek black town car pulled up to my suburban home. Victoria Mayfield stepped out, looking incredibly out of place in our quiet neighborhood, wearing a designer trench coat and dark sunglasses.

I let her in and led her to the kitchen, where I had freshly brewed coffee waiting. Lila was at school, and Colin was at work, leaving the house completely quiet.

Victoria sat down, refusing the coffee. She removed her sunglasses, revealing heavy dark circles under her eyes. She looked older, stripped of the flawless lighting and social armor of the gala.

"What do you want, Natalie?" she asked, her voice hollow. "Money? If you blackmail me, I can find a way to get you a settlement, but it will take time to move the funds without Everett noticing."

"I don't want your money, Victoria," I said, sitting across from her. "I want the truth. And I want Everett's empire dismantled."

Victoria let out a bitter, dry laugh. "You're insane. Everett is the most powerful man in this city. He has judges, politicians, and banks in his pocket. If you try to fight him, he will take your daughter away from you. He will declare you unfit. He has done it to others."

"He can try," I said calmly. "But he can't fight what he doesn't see coming. I want you to give me the master encryption keys to the Mayfield Enterprises offshore ledger. You have them. I know you've been using them to skim the money for Julian."

Victoria stared at me, terror shining in her eyes. "If I give you those, Everett goes to federal prison. And so do I."

"No," I corrected. "You will receive immunity. I have already contacted an old colleague of mine in the federal forensic division. If you cooperate as a whistle-blower who was forced into silence by a domestic abuser, you will keep your freedom and a portion of your family's original trust. But Everett will lose everything."

"And what about Julian?" she asked, her voice cracking. "What happens to my son?"

"Julian gets his life back," I said. "He can finally come home. He can use his real name. He doesn't have to live like a ghost in France anymore because his father will be behind bars."

Victoria looked down at her manicured hands, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. The weight of twelve years of lies, guilt, and fear seemed to crush her shoulders all at once. For the first time, I didn't see the cold, arrogant matriarch. I saw a mother who had sacrificed her son to a monster, and who had spent every day since regretful of her cowardice.

"He... he wanted to play music," Victoria whispered, her shoulders shaking. "When Julian was a boy, he would play his guitar on the back porch for hours. Everett hated it. He said it was soft. He said it was weak. When Everett beat him... I thought Julian was going to die. I did what I had to do to save his life."

"I know," I said softly, reaching across the table to touch her hand. "But now you can finally do what's right."

With a trembling hand, Victoria reached into her purse and pulled out a small, silver flash drive.

"Everything is on here," she said. "The ledger keys, the bank routing numbers, the shell company registrations. And... the police reports we paid to bury."

I took the flash drive. It was cool against my palm.

"Thank you, Victoria," I said. "The nightmare is almost over."
