Chapter 4 - The Evidence

Three days later, Eleanor called me into her office for an urgent meeting. Detective Miller was already there, sitting with a man in a dark suit who introduced himself as Manager Harrison from The Brass Rail.

"Mrs. Vance," Manager Harrison said, looking deeply uncomfortable. "I want to apologize on behalf of the establishment. We had no idea what was occurring on the patio that evening until the police requested the footage."

"Did you find the video?" I asked, my heart pounding.

Detective Miller pressed play on a laptop sitting on the conference table.

The video was crystal clear. It showed the interior of the restaurant and the exterior glass patio side-by-side.

At 6:45 PM, the video showed Nathan walking Oliver out to the patio. Nathan opened the door, pushed Oliver out onto the dark, freezing enclosure, and closed the door. Oliver wasn't wearing his gloves—they were left on the table inside.

At 6:50 PM, Oliver began knocking gently on the glass door. Inside, Evelyn was sitting at the head of the table, sipping wine and gesturing animatedly. Nathan was looking straight ahead.

At 7:15 PM, the temperature overlay on the video showed the outdoor condition dropping to 4°F with wind chill. Oliver was seen curling into a ball near the corner of the wall, shivering violently, trying to tuck his tiny hands into his arms.

At 7:40 PM, Oliver stood up, crying, and beat his fists against the glass window right next to where Evelyn was sitting. Evelyn turned, looked directly at Oliver through the glass, pulled the window blind down to block her view, and continued eating her dessert.

I gasped, covering my mouth as tears flooded my eyes. Detective Miller paused the video.

"She saw him," I whispered, my voice shaking with horror. "She looked right at him and pulled the blinds."

"Yes," Detective Miller said grimly. "And at 8:30 PM, Nathan finally went outside, grabbed the boy by the arm, and marched him to the car. They were inside for nearly two hours while the child was locked outside in sub-zero conditions."

"This video proves intent and blatant indifference to human life," Eleanor declared. "Nathan claimed he forgot the time. This footage shows he actively ignored his son, and his mother actively obstructed the child's attempt to seek help."

"Will this be enough for the prosecutor?" I asked, wiping my tears, replacing grief with burning resolve.

"More than enough," Detective Miller replied. "The District Attorney is upgrading the charges. We aren't just looking at child endangerment anymore. We are filing charges against Nathan for felony child abuse and reckless endangerment, and we are issuing a warrant for Evelyn Vance as an accessory for failure to report a child in danger."

The illusion of the untouchable Vance family was beginning to crack. They thought their social standing could hide their cruelty, but the cold truth was captured in high-definition video.
