Chapter 8 - The Aftermath
Three months passed.
The trial of Arthur and Mark Harrison was the biggest news story of the year. The evidence was so overwhelming, and the documentation I provided so airtight, that both of them pleaded guilty to avoid a maximum life sentence. Arthur was sentenced to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary. Mark received eight.
Patricia, stripped of her wealth and her social status, was forced to move into a small, rented apartment funded only by a minimal social security benefit she had from before her marriage. The high-society friends who once fawned over her now refused to return her calls.
Vanessa was facing separate civil charges for tax evasion related to her fraudulent charity. To avoid jail time, she had to liquidate every luxury item she owned—her jewelry, her designer clothes, her sports cars. She was currently working an entry-level job at a retail store just to pay her legal fees.
I stood on the balcony of a beautiful, modest beach house three hours away from the city. I had used my own savings—money I had earned legitimately and kept entirely separate from the family enterprise—to purchase it.
The sun was setting, casting a warm orange and pink glow over the ocean.
The kitchen door opened, and Emily ran out onto the deck. She was wearing a colorful swimsuit, her face covered in a bright, happy smile.
"Mommy! Look!" she shouted, pointing to the water.
Behind her walked Thomas, a certified child swim instructor I had hired two months ago. He smiled warmly at me. "She did excellent today, Clara. She jumped into the deep end all by herself, swam to the edge, and climbed out. No fear at all."
I knelt down and caught Emily as she threw her arms around my neck. "I did it, Mommy! I'm a big fish now!"

I looked out at the water. The pool at the hotel had been a place of terror. But here, the water was vast, clean, and beautiful. We were no longer drowning in the toxic currents of the Harrison family name.
