Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

By the time Emily turned eight, our life was full of light, love, and genuine connection.
Through my work at Aegis, I had met David, a brilliant and soft-spoken civil engineer who worked on community clean-water projects. David didn't care about corporate politics, high society, or wealth. He was kind, patient, and adored Emily from the very first day they met.
He never rushed me. He listened when I spoke about Arthur, honoring his memory rather than feeling threatened by it. And when Emily asked him to help her build a treehouse in the giant oak tree in our backyard, David spent three entire weekends measuring wood, sanding edges, and making sure every single nail was completely secure.
One Saturday evening, as the sun began to set, painting the sky in vibrant shades of gold, violet, and rose, David joined me on the back porch while Emily and our dog, Barnaby, chased fireflies across the lawn.
David handed me a glass of iced tea and sat beside me on the swing.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked gently, sliding his arm around my shoulder.
"I was just thinking about how quiet everything is," I murmured, resting my head against his shoulder. "For so long, I thought life had to be a constant battle. I thought love meant surviving someone else's storm."
"And now?" David asked softly.

"Now I know love is just the safe harbor after the storm," I said, smiling up at him.
He kissed my forehead, holding me close as the warm evening breeze rustled the leaves of the apple trees.
