Chapter 4 - The Tapes and the Boardroom

At 9:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose bright and hot over the city. I discharged Emily from the hospital, taking her straight to my close friend Sarah’s house—a quiet, secure home in the suburban outskirts. Sarah was a former pediatrician and someone I trusted with my life.

"She’ll be safe here, Clara," Sarah said, hugging me tightly. "You go do what you need to do."

"Thank you," I murmured, kissing Emily's forehead. "Mommy will be back soon."

By 11:00 AM, I arrived at the high-rise office building of Sterling Global Logistics. I was dressed in a tailored black suit that had sat untouched in my closet since Arthur’s funeral. My hair was pulled back into a sleek bun, and my eyes were covered by dark sunglasses until I stepped into the polished marble lobby.

The receptionist, a young woman named Brenda who had worked for my father for years, gasped when she saw me.

"Mrs. Sterling—I mean, Clara! Mr. Sterling is in the emergency board meeting. He told security—"

"He told security not to let me up?" I smiled softly. "Brenda, I own the land this building sits on, and as of eight o'clock this morning, Aegis Innovations has revoked Sterling Global's software license. I'm not here as his daughter. I'm here as his chief creditor."

Before she could press the panic button under her desk, Julian Vance stepped out of the private elevator, accompanied by two process servers in dark suits and two armed off-duty police officers.

"Ready, Clara?" Julian asked, handing me a leather briefcase.

"More than ready."

We took the elevator straight to the top floor. Through the glass walls of the main conference room, I could see my father at the head of the table. He was red-faced, gesticulating wildly toward his chief financial officer and three major investors. Vanessa sat near the back of the room, looking bored and playing with her phone, having accompanied him to demand an allowance increase for her upcoming trip to Paris.

Julian pushed the heavy mahogany doors open.

The conversation inside dead-stopped. Every head turned toward us.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?" Richard slammed his palms onto the table, standing up. His eyes locked onto mine, burning with fury. "Clara! Have you lost your mind entirely? Security, remove these people!"

"Security isn't coming, Dad," I said smoothly, stepping into the room and walking down the length of the conference table. "They’ve read the updated corporate registry."

Julian stepped forward and laid a thick stack of legal documents in front of each board member.

"Gentlemen," Julian announced in a booming, precise voice. "My name is Julian Vance, representing Clara Sterling, sole heir to the estate of Arthur Sterling and primary shareholder of Aegis Innovations. As of 6:00 AM today, an emergency injunction was granted by the Superior Court, revoking Richard Sterling’s proxy voting rights due to documented financial fraud and ongoing criminal investigations."

Panic flickered across the board members' faces.

"What fraud?" one investor demanded, leaning forward.

"My father," I said, looking around the table, "has been funneling over twelve million dollars from Arthur's trust into Sterling Global's accounts to mask your operational deficits. That constitutes grand larceny and corporate embezzlement. Furthermore..." I tapped a remote control on the podium at the front of the room.

The large presentation screen on the wall flickered to life.

It wasn't a financial chart. It was the raw, high-definition footage from the resort pool deck.

The room went dead silent.

On the screen, in crisp color, everyone watched as Vanessa stepped closer to Emily. They watched Vanessa’s foot subtly extend, giving my daughter a distinct nudge. They saw Emily fall into the water. And then, they saw me rush forward—only for Richard to grab my arm, hauling me back violently, holding me while my five-year-old child thrashed in six feet of water.

A collective gasp echoed through the boardroom. One of the female board members pressed a hand to her mouth in utter horror.

"That's... that's edited!" Vanessa shrieked, jumping out of her chair, her face pale as a sheet. "That's fake! Dad was just holding her back because she was screaming!"

"The local police department has the original raw file, Vanessa," I said quietly, turning to her. "And as of twenty minutes ago, an arrest warrant was signed for reckless endangerment and child abuse for both you and Dad."

Richard’s knees seemed to buckle. He grabbed the edge of the mahogany table to steady himself, his face draining of all color.

"Clara..." Patricia’s voice came from the back corner; she had been sitting quietly near the window. She hurried over, her face twisted in tears. "Clara, please! He's your father! Vanessa is your sister! You can't put your own flesh and blood in prison! Think of what this will do to us!"

"I am thinking of my family," I replied, looking my mother straight in the eye without a shred of warmth. "My family is Emily. You made your choice at the pool deck, Mom. You chose to stand there and watch my daughter drown. Now you can watch your empire fall."
