Chapter 9 - The Butterfly Garden

Two years after the incident, on Lily’s sixth birthday, there were no tiered princess cakes, no chaotic crowds, and no toxic family members lingering in the background.
Instead, we celebrated in our backyard, which we had transformed into a vibrant butterfly garden filled with blooming lavender, milkweed, and colorful wildflowers. Friends from Lily’s new school were running around, playing tag, their laughter ringing out like music under the warm afternoon sun.
Lily’s kindergarten teacher, Arthur—a kind, gentle man who had supported Lily’s transition into school—helped set up a craft table where the children painted wooden birdhouses.
When it came time for dessert, Lily proudly stepped up to the table. Together, she and I had baked a simple, delicious strawberry shortcake from scratch.
"Make a wish, sweetie," I whispered, kneeling beside her and wrapping my arms around her waist.
Lily looked around the garden—at her friends laughing, at Dr. Vance smiling near the patio, at Arthur helping a child with watercolors, and finally at me. Her large brown eyes were filled with absolute security and happiness.
She blew out her six candles in one strong breath. Everyone cheered.
"What did you wish for, baby?" I asked, kissing her forehead right above her tiny silver scar.
May you like
"I didn't wish for anything," Lily said softly, wrapping her little arms around my neck and squeezing tight. "Because I already have everything I ever wanted right here with you, Mommy."
Tears pricked my eyes, but they were pure tears of joy. The shadows of our past had completely dissolved into the bright daylight of our present.
