Chapter 5 - The Trial Begins

Six months later, the high-profile trial of State v. Chloe Vance & Marcus Kane commenced at the County Superior Courthouse. The case had captured national headlines—a shocking tale of familial betrayal, violent crime, and a mother's relentless pursuit of justice.

The courtroom was packed to capacity every single day. Journalists, legal analysts, and curious onlookers crammed into the wooden pews. On the left sat Marcus and Chloe, dressed in formal attire arranged by their court-appointed defense attorneys, attempting to present an image of tragic innocence. On the right sat the prosecution team, accompanied by me.

Lily, now four and a half, was thriving. Thanks to exceptional care and physical therapy, her cheek had healed remarkably well. A thin, silver line ran along her left cheekbone—a mark of her resilience.

The defense team tried every trick in the book. They argued that Chloe had no knowledge of the blade inside the cake, claiming Marcus had placed it there without her consent. They attempted to frame the cake-smashing as a "harmless family tradition gone horribly wrong due to a third-party hazard."

Then, Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins called her star technical witness: Dr. Vance.

Dr. Vance took the witness stand in her crisp medical coat, projecting absolute calm and authority.

"Dr. Vance," Prosecutor Jenkins asked, stepping up to the jury box. "In your expert medical opinion, was the force applied to the victim's head consistent with an accidental or playful shove?"

"Absolutely not," Dr. Vance declared firmly, looking directly at the twelve jurors. "The angle of impact, the severe bruising around the back of the child's skull where her hair was grabbed, and the force required to bury a heavy metal object three centimeters into soft facial tissue indicate intentional, violent downward acceleration. This was an assault."

Next came the digital evidence. The prosecution introduced text messages recovered from Chloe’s encrypted messaging apps. One message sent from Chloe to Marcus just two hours before the birthday party read:

“The cake is loaded. Once I slam the kid’s face into it, everyone will panic and rush to the hospital. In the chaos, I’ll grab the sliced section with the metal and throw it in the river. Nobody will suspect a thing.”

Gasps echoed across the courtroom. Chloe buried her face in her hands, while her attorney frantically raised objections that were swiftly overruled by the judge. The mountain of deceit was crumbling, layer by painful layer.
