Chapter 4 - The Legal Net Tightens

The fallout within the local social circles was swift and merciless. Word travels fast in upscale Bloomfield Hills, especially when police cruisers are parked outside a prominent family's estate for six hours. By evening, my father's business associates had started whispering, and his phone calls to corporate partners were suddenly going straight to voicemail.

I remained at the hospital in Ann Arbor, keeping a vigil by Emma's bedside. Dr. Chen and her surgical team had successfully completed the primary debridement and dressing procedures. Emma was resting under mild sedation, her little hand wrapped in gauze, breathing softly. Every time I looked at the white bandages covering the left side of her face, a wave of cold rage washed over me, instantly suppressed by the need to be strong for her.

My phone buzzed continuously on the bedside table. It was no longer my mother or Vanessa calling. It was a barrage of frantic messages from my father's lawyers, attempting to set up an "informal family meeting" to "resolve this misunderstanding out of court."

I forwarded every single text directly to Detective Vance and my own legal counsel, a fierce civil litigation attorney named David Sterling whom I had retained the moment we left the emergency room.

At 9:00 PM, David Sterling walked into Emma's hospital room. He was a sharp-dressed man in his fifties with silver-streaked hair and an unyielding reputation in personal injury and criminal negligence cases.

"Arthur," David said quietly, shaking my hand before looking down at Emma with genuine sympathy. "How is she holding up?"

"She's sleeping," I whispered, stepping out into the quiet hallway so we wouldn't disturb her. "The doctors say the physical scars will heal significantly with laser treatment over the next few years, but the emotional trauma... God, David, she flinches every time a nurse walks into the room."

David's expression hardened. "They are going to pay for every single second of this. Not just civilly, but criminally. The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office just accepted Detective Vance's preliminary charging packet."

"What are the charges?" I asked, gripping the railing of the hallway.

"For Vanessa: Felony child abuse in the second degree, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and infliction of intentional emotional distress. Because Emma is a minor, those carry heavy mandatory minimum prison sentences under Michigan law," David explained smoothly. "And for your mother, Eleanor: Tampering with evidence, witness tampering, and accessory after the fact."

I closed my eyes, letting out a long breath I felt like I'd been holding all day. "My father?"

"Right now, Richard is scrambling to distance himself," David said. "He spent the last six hours on the phone with PR firms and criminal defense attorneys trying to prove he had no direct hand in the cover-up. But my firm is preparing a multi-million-dollar civil lawsuit naming all three of them—Vanessa, Eleanor, and Richard, as well as the household entity—for gross negligence, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. We are going to freeze their assets before they can hide them."

"Do it," I said without a moment of hesitation. "Take everything. Strip them of every penny they use to buy their moral superiority."

David nodded approvingly. "Good. Because tomorrow morning, the arrest warrants are being executed. Publicly."
