Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Floor

My mother looked at my unconscious child on the kitchen floor and said,

"Stop shouting. Take her somewhere. She's disturbing everyone's mood."

They thought I would leave that house crying and powerless.

They forgot one thing.

Burn units document everything.

And people who think family will protect them always make mistakes.

I was upstairs in my parents' Michigan house when I heard a loud metallic crash followed by a scream that stopped far too suddenly.

I ran downstairs.

Emma was lying on the kitchen floor.

Motionless.

The skillet was still spinning nearby.

Scrambled eggs were scattered across the hardwood.

The left side of her face was already turning deep red.

My sister, Vanessa, stood there with her arms folded.

"She sat in Lily's place," she said.

That was her entire explanation.

I dropped to my knees and lifted Emma into my arms.

She didn't respond.

Her body felt heavy.

I turned toward Vanessa in shock, but before I could finish a sentence, my mother interrupted me.

"Lower your voice."

Then she glanced at my injured daughter and added,

"Take her somewhere before breakfast is ruined for everyone."

Even my father seemed more concerned about the inconvenience than the child lying on the floor.

I carried Emma to the car and drove to the hospital praying the entire way.

Minutes later, doctors were examining her.

Then Dr. Sarah Chen looked at me with a serious expression.

"Second- and third-degree burns," she said quietly.

The room spun.

As Emma was prepared for treatment, I finally checked my phone.

Seventeen missed calls from my mother.

Twelve texts from Vanessa.

Not one message asked whether Emma was okay.

Then I saw a text from my mother that made my blood run cold.

"Say Emma pulled the pan down herself. That's the only version that makes sense."

I stared at the screen.

May you like

And suddenly I realized they weren't just protecting Vanessa.

They were already trying to create a shield.
