Chapter 8 - The Legal Battle and the New Normal

Three months passed in a blur of court hearings, social worker evaluations, and the slow, painstaking process of helping a five-year-old girl rebuild her shattered sense of reality.
The case against David Vance, Sergio Cruz, and the Apex Research startup exploded into national headlines. Investigative journalists uncovered a vast, shadowy network of corporate behavioral testing facilities that preyed on vulnerable family situations, using manufactured compliance systems to gather telemetry data on child psychology. David Vance’s legal team tried every dirty trick in the book to delay proceedings, but the mountain of digital evidence—including the live-streamed audio, the hidden cameras, and the testimony from secondary lab technicians who turned state's evidence—sealed their fate.
David and Sergio were denied bail, facing multiple felony counts of child endangerment, extortion, and operating an unlicensed confinement facility. Paula, facing charges of criminal conspiracy and child neglect, cooperated with prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence, though her parental rights were permanently and irrevocably terminated by the Travis County Family Court.
Throughout it all, Ruby stayed with me.
At first, the recovery was fragile. Every time a door closed too loudly, her shoulders would rise, and her eyes would dart toward the corner of the room looking for invisible lenses. Whenever we sat down for dinner, she would still look at her plate with that heartbreaking hesitation, whispering, “Uncle... am I allowed to eat today?”
And every single time, I would look her in the eyes, smile, and say, "You are always allowed to eat here, Ruby. As much as you want."
Slowly, week by week, the shadow began to recede.
We turned the guest room into a bright, colorful wonderland filled with pastel wallpaper, stuffed animals, and shelves overflowing with books. We baked cookies on Sunday afternoons, letting the chocolate batter spill across the kitchen counter without a single word of scolding. She started attending a wonderful local kindergarten where she made friends, laughed out loud without covering her mouth, and learned that the world could be a kind and welcoming place.
The permanent legal custody papers arrived on a bright Tuesday morning in late spring.

I opened the thick manila envelope sitting on my newly repaired front porch, pulled out the official decree stamped by the Travis County District Court, and read the final words: Permanent Sole Legal and Physical Custody granted to Robert Vance.
No more proxies. No more secret schedules. No more fear.
