Chapter 10 - The Bright Horizon

The sun began to dip below the Austin skyline, painting the evening clouds in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.
We sat together on the front porch swing, watching the neighbors walk their dogs down the quiet suburban street. The gentle evening breeze carried the scent of blooming jasmine from the garden bed I had planted in the spring—a garden where Ruby and I spent hours digging in the dirt, planting flowers without a single rule hanging over our heads.
Ruby was curled up safely in my lap, her eyelids growing heavy as the day's excitement caught up with her. She held her favorite stuffed bear—a fluffy brown teddy I had won for her at the community fair—clutched tightly in her arms.
"Uncle Robert?" she whispered sleepily, her voice soft and drowsy.
"Yeah, buddy?"
"Are we always going to live here together?"
I pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head, tightening my arm around her secure and warm against the cooling night air.
"Always, Ruby," I whispered into the quiet twilight. "Just you and me. Always."
She let out a long, contented sigh, her breathing evening out as she drifted off into deep, untroubled sleep.

The front door behind us stood sturdy and secure, its new deadbolt locked against a world that could no longer touch us. The nightmare of the past was gone, buried under the weight of justice and the fierce, unyielding love of an uncle who had answered a midnight knock and chosen to fight.
Ahead of us lay a bright, open horizon—filled with school days, birthday parties, scraped knees, weekend road trips, and a lifetime of safe, unbroken tomorrows.
