Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Armed with the video, Marcus and I walked into the interrogation room at the county police headquarters.
Brenda was sitting at the metal table, flanked by her attorney—a tall, expensive-looking man in a pinstripe suit who was mid-sentence, lecturing the state prosecutor about filing false arrest charges.
“My client has been cooperative, gentle, and deeply traumatized by this entire ordeal,” the lawyer declared smugly. “You have no grounds to hold her past the four-hour mark. We will be filing a civil suit against Mrs. Sarah Vance for defamation and false prosecution—”
Marcus walked to the head of the table, pulled out a laptop, and slammed it down. He didn't say a word. He simply turned the screen toward Brenda and her lawyer and pressed play.
The room went dead silent except for the crisp audio echoing from the laptop speakers.
Brenda’s voice filled the room: “Here you go, Leo! Drink it all up, it’s a special trick drink to make you run faster!”
On the screen, Brenda’s face was perfectly clear as she handed the poisoned drink to my innocent son.
The lawyer’s smug expression vanished in a microsecond. He closed his folder, pushed his chair back, and sat in total silence, staring at the screen in utter horror.
Brenda’s face turned an unnatural shade of grey. Her eyes bulged as she watched her own meticulous plan unravel in front of the police, the prosecutor, and me.
“Where... where did you get that?” Brenda stammered, her voice stripping away every layer of fake innocence, revealing the monster underneath.
“Your daughter saved Leo’s life,” I said, stepping up to the table, leaning down until I was inches from her face. “Maya recorded you. She kept the evidence because deep down, even an eight-year-old child knows you are a monster.”
“Sarah... please,” Brenda began, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she reached toward me. “I did it for us! Mark was losing the house! We were going to lose everything! The trust fund... it was just sitting there! We weren't going to kill him, just... make him sick enough so you’d be declared unfit!”
“You poisoned a nine-year-old boy for money,” Marcus said, his voice cold as ice as he stepped forward with a fresh set of federal warrants. “Brenda Vance, you are under arrest for attempted aggravated murder, child endangerment, identity fraud, and forgery.”
“Mark knew!” Brenda suddenly shrieked, pointing wildly at the door, betraying her husband without a second thought. “Mark came up with the trust fund idea! He forged the court documents! Don't put this all on me!”

“Don't worry,” Marcus replied, slapping the cuffs onto her wrists with a heavy, definitive metallic click. “Mark is sitting in the cell right down the hall. You two can share the blame in state prison.”
As the officers dragged Brenda out of the room, screaming and cursing my name, I felt no anger left—only a profound, washing sense of relief. The nightmare was finally over.
