Chapter 9 - The Recovery

I ran down the hospital corridor, my heart soaring with every step. When I pushed open the door to Room 412, the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was no longer slow and terrifying.

It was fast, steady, and alive.

Sitting up in the bed, prop up by two large white pillows, was Leo. He had a small plastic cup of apple juice in his hand, his hair messy, his brown eyes bright and shining as he looked toward the door.

“Mom?” he croaked, his voice scratchy from the oxygen tube that had been removed hours earlier.

“Leo!” I cried out, throwing my arms around him, burying my face in his neck, smelling the sweet, familiar scent of my boy. “Oh, baby! You’re awake! You’re okay!”

“Mom, why are you crying?” Leo asked, hugging me back tightly with his small arms. “Aunt Brenda gave me a juice box, and then I felt really tired... I tried to stay awake to play with Maya, but my legs felt like jelly.”

“I know, sweetie. I know,” I sobbed, kissing his cheeks, his forehead, his hands. “You don't ever have to worry about that again. You’re safe now. Mom’s got you.”

Julian walked into the room moments later, holding two paper bags filled with soft toys and comic books. Behind him stepped Maya, looking timidly around the doorway.

Leo’s face lit up. “Maya!”

Maya ran to the side of the bed, throwing her arms around her cousin. “Leo! I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!”

“For what?” Leo asked, confused, but smiling as he handed her a comic book from Julian’s bag. “We didn't even get to play tag near the trees!”

I looked at Julian, who gave me a warm, reassuring node. The legal battle over custody was already underway—with Mark and Brenda facing decades in prison, Julian and I had already filed papers for joint legal guardianship of Maya, ensuring she would be raised in a loving, safe home away from the shadow of her parents’ crimes.

The court quickly dismissed all charges against me, issuing a formal apology for the temporary custody hold. The trust fund was secured under an independent judicial trustee, fully protected for Leo’s future education and well-being.

For the first time in years, the weight that had been crushing my chest was gone.
