Chapter 9 - The Verdict and Justice
The trial lasted for five days.
On the final day, the judge, a stern, respected veteran of the bench named Judge Thomas Miller, prepared to deliver his instructions to the jury. But before he did, he asked the defense and prosecution to approach the bench.
He looked directly at Vanessa, then at Robert and Diane, who were sitting in the front row of the gallery.
"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Miller said, his voice echoing in the quiet courtroom, "I have seen many acts of violence. But what I find most abhorrent about this case is not just the initial act of cruelty against a defenseless toddler. It is the systemic, cold-blooded effort of an entire family to prioritize their own comfort and reputation over the agonizing pain of a baby. Calling this an 'accident' would not save you, Mrs. Hale. And it will not save anyone who helped you lie."
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
When they returned, the foreperson stood up.
"On the charge of felony child abuse, how do you find?"
"Guilty."
"On the charge of assault with a deadly weapon, how do you find?"
"Guilty."
"On the charge of reckless endangerment, how do you find?"
"Guilty."
Vanessa collapsed into her chair, sobbing hysterically, as the handcuffs were placed back on her wrists. She was sentenced to four years in state prison, with no possibility of early parole due to the severity of the child abuse charges.
But the justice did not stop there.
Based on the evidence presented in the trial and the security footage, the District Attorney’s office filed formal charges against Diane and Robert Hale for conspiracy to obstruct justice, witness intimidation, and child endangerment.
Faced with the undeniable video evidence and the prospect of prison time in their golden years, Robert and Diane pleaded guilty to reduced charges.
