Chapter 6 - The Discovery of the Truth

As the criminal trial approached, the defense team, led by Arthur Vance, tried every dirty trick in the book. They demanded access to my medical records, trying to prove that I suffered from postpartum depression and was therefore "unstable" and prone to fabricating stories. They hired a "biomechanical expert" who prepared a highly detailed, completely fabricated report showing how a "accidental trip" could project coffee in the exact pattern found on Lily’s skin.
But Clara Vance was three steps ahead of them.
During the discovery phase of the civil lawsuit, Clara filed a motion demanding all security footage from the Hale residence. Robert and Diane’s home was equipped with a state-of-the-art home security system, including several outdoor cameras that overlooked the backyard and patio.
When Clara requested the footage, Arthur Vance responded that the security system had suffered a "technical glitch" on the day of the cookout, and that no footage from that afternoon existed.
"They deleted it," I said to Clara during a meeting in her office. "I know they did. Robert is obsessed with those cameras. He checks them on his phone constantly."
"Of course they deleted it," Clara said, a sharp, confident smile spreading across her face. "But they made a critical mistake. They deleted the local storage on their home hard drive. They didn't realize that their system automatically backs up encrypted files to a cloud server managed by a third-party security company."
Clara stood up and tapped a manila folder on her desk. "We subpoenaed the cloud hosting company. And guess what? They had the raw, unedited footage from the afternoon of July 14th."
My heart leaped into my throat. "You have it?"
"I do," Clara said, her voice dropping to a serious tone. "And I need to warn you, Sarah. It is incredibly difficult to watch. But it is the smoking gun."
She turned around her laptop and pressed play.
On the screen, the Hale backyard was bathed in warm summer sunlight. I saw myself carrying the fruit bowl inside. I saw Lily toddling near the steps. I saw Caleb drop the red toy truck and run off.
Then, I saw Lily pick up the truck.
The camera angle was crystal clear. It captured Vanessa sitting under the umbrella. I saw her face. It didn't look surprised or startled. It looked dark, calculated, and malicious.
She didn't trip. She didn't slip.
She looked at Lily, stood up deliberately, took her steaming ceramic mug, and with a vicious, overhand throwing motion, hurled the boiling liquid directly at my baby's face.
I closed my eyes, tears streaming down my face, as the audio captured Lily's immediate, blood-curdling scream. On the video, I saw myself run out, dropping to my knees. I saw Diane and Robert walk over, pointing angrily at the gate, their mouths moving in shouting motions, completely ignoring the screaming child.
But the most damning part of the video occurred after I left.
The camera kept recording.
It showed Diane, Robert, Mark, and Vanessa standing in a circle on the patio. Robert was gesturing wildly. He pointed at the security camera on the wall, then at his phone. He was clearly giving instructions.
Then, Vanessa picked up her empty coffee mug, walked over to a specific spot on the patio, dropped to her knees, and pretended to trip, spilling nothing, while Robert filmed her on his phone. They were practicing their cover-up story while my daughter was screaming on her way to the emergency room.

"Oh my god," Ethan whispered, his face white with horror. "They planned the lie. They practiced it."
"This is criminal conspiracy to obstruct justice," Clara said, her eyes burning with professional satisfaction. "The District Attorney is going to have a field day with this."
