Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

While my mother’s heart was turning, Melissa wasn't going to disappear quietly. Feeling humiliated by Brandon's divorce filing and the family's total rejection, she decided to make one last desperate attempt to regain control.
She showed up at my parents' house uninvited on a Sunday afternoon, knowing the entire family—including myself, Ethan, and Brandon—was gathered in the backyard. She marched through the side gate, dressed to impress, carrying a folder of legal papers and a face set in stone.
"Evelyn! Richard!" Melissa shouted, ignoring the kids playing near the patio. "We need to talk about the division of property, and I suggest you listen before I take Brandon for everything he has."
My brother stood up from his lawn chair, but before he could speak, my mother did something that shocked us all.
Evelyn stood up. She walked steadily across the lawn, stopping just inches from Melissa. She didn't raise her voice, nor did she cower.
"Melissa," my mother said, her tone as cold and clear as mountain water. "You are no longer a part of this family. You will not threaten my son. You will not step foot on this property again. Any communications will go through Brandon's lawyer."
Melissa blinked, stunned. "Evelyn? You're taking their side? After everything I did for you?"
"You did nothing for me," my mother replied firmly. "You used my weaknesses to divide my family. But that ends today. Leave. Now."

Melissa looked past my mother toward my father, expecting him to intervene or play the mediator as he had for decades. But my father just stood by my mother’s side, his arm resting gently against her back, offering unwavering support.
Realizing she had no leverage left, no allies, and no power over anyone in the yard, Melissa turned on her high heels and marched out of the gate for the last time.
