Chapter 5 - Echoes in the Empty House

The ultimatum fractured the family instantly. Brandon, torn between his wife’s indignation and his father’s unwavering stance, stormed out with Melissa, declaring they wouldn't return until Dad "came to his senses."
My mother was devastated, but not for the reason one might hope. She was terrified of the gossip, terrified that her friends at the country club would realize her picture-perfect family was cracking. For two weeks, she tried to give my father the silent treatment—a tactic that had worked for decades to bring him back into line.
Except this time, it didn't work.
My father used the silence to act. He didn't brood. Instead, he spent his evenings in the garage or over at my house. He brought Ethan new LEGO sets, not to replace the broken ones, but to build them together. They spent hours sitting on my living room floor, engineering massive cranes and space stations.
One Tuesday evening, while Ethan was in his bedroom reading, Dad sat with me on the porch.
"Your mother asked me yesterday when I was going to put the ring back on," Dad said, looking at his bare left hand.
"What did you tell her?" I asked.
"I told her that a ring is a symbol of a covenant built on mutual truth and protection," he said softly. "I told her that until she chooses to protect her children and grandchildren over her pride, the ring stays in my desk drawer."

"Do you think she ever will?" I asked, feeling a lump in my throat.
Dad looked off into the twilight. "People only change when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the fear of changing. Right now, your mother is still more afraid of changing. But I have faith in her... eventually."
