Chapter 4 - The Legal Reversal

The morning air was crisp as Mark and I walked into the police station alongside Rachel Vance.
We filed an official report against Lana for destruction of property, harassment, and defamation. Rachel provided the detective with the unedited high-definition video, the receipts for the $280 cake, and timestamps of Lana’s extortion attempt demanding two hundred dollars under the threat of causing a scene.
The detective, a stern man named Officer Miller, watched the video on his monitor. His jaw tightened when he heard Lana's shrill voice demanding money while my daughter wept in the background.
"This is open-and-shut," Officer Miller noted, writing down details. "The video your sister posted was malicious fabrication. We will be reaching out to her for a formal interview regarding extortion and property damage charges."
While the police initiated their process, Rachel authorized us to release the complete, unedited camera footage online, accompanied by a formal statement from her law firm.
We uploaded the full twelve-minute video titled: The Truth Behind the Pineapple Cake.
The response was instantaneous and catastrophic for my family.
Within four hours, the new video completely eclipsed Lana’s heavily edited clip. The full footage revealed everything: Lana entering late, her cruel demeanor, her demand for cash, her deliberate dropping of the three-tier cake into the trash, her attempt to slap me, and her dramatic, calculated fall onto the grass when my parents arrived.
The internet's collective rage flipped 180 degrees overnight.
The very commentators who had terrorized me turned their wrath directly toward Lana and my parents. Lana’s social media accounts were flooded with thousands of messages condemning her toxic behavior. Her personal blog was taken down within hours due to mass reporting.
By 3:00 PM, my employer called me directly.
"Vera," my director said, sounding deeply embarrassed. "We have reviewed the complete footage and the statement from your attorney. Your administrative leave is revoked immediately, with full back pay. We are deeply sorry for reacting prematurely to an unsourced social media video."
I accepted the apology, but I knew my life was shifting away from seeking approval from people who abandoned me at the first sign of trouble.
That evening, as Mark, Ellie, and I sat down for dinner, my phone rang.
It was my father.
It was the first time he had called me directly in over three years without my mother acting as an intermediary.
I put the phone on speaker.
"Vera," his voice sounded tired, aged, and uncharacteristically shaken. "We saw the new video."
"I know you did, Dad," I said calmly.
"Your sister is hysterical. The police came to the house two hours ago to serve her with a summons for destruction of property and extortion. She's facing criminal charges, Vera! You have to drop this! You're destroying her life!"
I listened to his panicking voice, waiting for the familiar ache of guilt that had ruled my childhood.
It didn't come. There was only a profound, peaceful stillness inside me.
"She destroyed her own life, Dad," I replied quietly. "And you helped her do it by protecting her from consequences every single time she hurt someone else."
"She is your sister!" he barked, reverting to his old authoritarian tone. "Family stands by family!"

"Where were you when she threw Ellie's cake away?" I countered, my voice firm as steel. "Where were you when I graduated college? Where were you my entire life? You were standing by Lana. You made your choice thirty years ago, Dad. Now live with it."
Before he could answer, I hung up the phone and blocked his number.
