Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Before Caleb could pull the trigger, I swung the iron fire poker with every ounce of strength in my body.
The heavy metal bar struck his wrist with a sickening crack. Caleb cried out in pain, dropping the handgun onto the hallway runner rug. The gun clattered down the wooden floorboards, sliding out of sight toward the bathroom door.
Caleb lunged forward with a furious roar, tackling me into the wall. The impact knocked the wind out of my lungs, sending bright spots flashing across my vision. The iron poker fell from my grip as we crashed to the floor.
He pinned me down, his massive hands wrapping firmly around my throat, shutting off my airway. I clawed wildly at his face, digging my fingernails into his skin, dragging red gashes down his cheek. He hissed in pain but did not release his grip.
"You stupid bitch!" he growled, pressing his weight down onto my windpipe.
My vision began to dim around the edges. Darkness crept into the corners of my eyes as my lungs burned for oxygen. I reached out frantically with my left hand, sweeping the floorboards until my fingers brushed against the heavy brass base of a decorative floor lamp that had been knocked over during the scuffle.
Summoning the absolute last reserve of my strength, I grabbed the heavy brass base and swung it upward, striking Caleb directly across the side of his temple.
The heavy blow disoriented him. His grip loosened, and he stumbled backward, clutching his bleeding head.
I gasped violently, hauling air back into my lungs, rolling onto my hands and knees. I scrambled frantically across the floor toward the bathroom door where the gun had slid.
Caleb shook his head, clearing his vision, and lunged after me, grabbing my ankle and dragging me backward across the floor. I kicked wildly with my free leg, my heel catching him squarely under the chin. His head snapped back, releasing my foot.
I reached the gun, scooped it up off the floor, rolled onto my back, and pointed the weapon directly at Caleb’s chest with both hands.
"DON'T MOVE!" I screamed, my voice raw and ragged.
Caleb froze on his knees five feet away. Blood was dripping down the side of his face from his temple and the claw marks on his cheek. His eyes were wide, staring at the barrel of the handgun held firmly in my trembling hands.
"Rachel... come on," Caleb panted, raising his blood-stained hands slowly into the air, trying to switch back to his manipulative tone. "You're not a killer. Put the gun down. We can work this out."
"Shut up!" I shouted, holding the sight dead center on his chest. "Don't you dare speak to me!"
"Think about your daughter, Rachel," he coaxed softly, taking a fraction of an inch forward. "You shoot me, you go to prison. Is that what you want for Emma?"
"Step back!" I commanded, squeezing the trigger slightly to show him I wasn't bluffing. "Take one more step and I swear to God I will put a bullet through you!"
Caleb looked into my eyes and saw the absolute, unflinching resolve of a mother protecting her family. The arrogant confidence vanished from his eyes, replaced by genuine, unadulterated fear. He slowly lowered himself flat onto his stomach, hands spread wide across the hardwood floor.
At that exact moment, flashing red and blue light flickered through the bedroom windows, piercing the dense fog outside. The heavy wail of police sirens echoed down the driveway, followed by the sound of multiple car doors slamming shut.
"POLICE! OPEN UP!" a amplified voice boomed through a megaphone outside.
I kept the gun aimed squarely at Caleb’s back until the bedroom door was kicked open and four armed sheriff’s deputies poured into the hallway, lights blindingly bright.
"DROP THE WEAPON! POLICE!"
I immediately set the handgun on the floor, raised my hands, and slid backward away from Caleb. "He broke in! He's armed! The children are safe in the closet!"
Within seconds, three deputies tackled Caleb, slamming his face into the floorboards and pinning his arms behind his back with plastic zip-ties and steel handcuffs.
Officer Ramirez pushed past the deputies, dropping to her knees beside me and throwing a blanket over my shivering shoulders. "Rachel! Are you alright?"
I couldn't speak. I could only point weakly toward the master bedroom closet.

Ramirez ran over, pulled the heavy dresser away from the wall, and opened the small wooden door. Emma and Lily tumbled out of the darkness, tears streaming down their faces, and threw their arms around my neck. I held them both so tight I felt as though our hearts were beating as one.
Caleb was dragged down the hallway, kicking and screaming obscenities as the deputies forced him out into the rain and into the back of a armored police transport.
