Chapter 6 - The Siege

I sprinted up the stairs to the loft, my heart hammering like a trapped bird inside my chest. "Emma! Lily! Get up right now!" I whispered urgently, shaking both girls awake.

"Mom? What's wrong?" Emma asked, rubbing her eyes sleepily.

"Don't make a sound," I commanded, pulling them out of bed. "We are going into the hidden crawlspace behind the closet. Right now!"

When David had handed me the keys, he had mentioned a small storage space built behind the master closet knee-wall—a remnant of the cabin’s original design used to store winter gear. I pushed aside a stack of heavy wool blankets, unlatched the small wooden door, and shoved both girls inside the dark, cramped space.

"Stay here. Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear," I whispered, looking straight into Lily’s terrified eyes. "I love you both so much."

I pulled the wooden door shut and dragged a heavy oak dresser in front of it to conceal the opening.

Downstairs, the sound of glass shattering echoed through the house as the front porch window was smashed inward. Heavy boots stepped over the broken glass, crunching onto the hardwood floor of the living room.

I grabbed an iron fire poker resting by the upstairs banister, clutching it with both hands until my knuckles turned white. My breath was shallow and fast as I crouched at the top of the dark stairwell.

"Rachel!" Caleb’s voice boomed through the lower floor, dripping with psychotic amusement. "I know you're in here! You really thought a piece-of-trash cabin in the woods was going to hide you from me?"

I heard the sound of furniture being overturned downstairs—chairs being thrown, lamps smashing against the floor as he searched the rooms.

"You ruined my life, Rachel!" Caleb roared, his footsteps slowly advancing toward the base of the stairs. "I had everything under control until you had to pull that damn swimsuit strap! Sarah was under my thumb, Lily kept her mouth shut, and now I'm facing fifteen years in a state pen!"

"The police are already on their way, Caleb!" I shouted down into the darkness, trying to keep my voice steady. "Sarah called them! They know you cut your monitor!"

A dark laugh echoed up the stairwell. "Sarah is an idiot. And the police are at least twenty minutes away down a muddy mountain road in thick fog. That's twenty minutes too late for you."

His heavy boots began to climb the wooden stairs, one slow, deliberate step at a time. The stairs creaked under his weight.

I retreated into the dark hallway, holding the heavy iron poker raised high above my shoulder. The air felt thick, heavy with the metallic smell of adrenaline and fear.

Caleb’s tall silhouette appeared at the top of the landing. In his right hand, illuminated by the dim moonlight filtering through the sky window, was a black steel handgun.

"Where is the girl?" Caleb sneered, stepping into the narrow hallway. "Give her to me, and maybe I'll let you and your daughter walk out of here."

"Over my dead body," I snarled.

Caleb raised the gun. "That can easily be arranged."
