Chapter 5 - The Legal Shark

Sarah Lin’s office did not look like a charity operation. It was located on the top floor of a high-rise in downtown Las Vegas, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the strip. Sarah herself was a petite woman in a flawless tailored gray suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sharp, unforgiving bun.

"Marcus told me what happened," Sarah said, skipping the pleasantries as she poured me a cup of coffee. "I’ve already pulled the preliminary police report from Nye County. The highway camera footage is devastating for them. It completely destroys any defense of 'accidental separation.' But the financial drainage? That’s where we can really make them bleed."

"Can I get the money back?" I asked desperately. "It was my money. My earnings."

"Technically, because her name was still on the account from your college days, the bank allowed the transfer," Sarah explained, tapping her pen against a legal pad. "However, in the state of Nevada, executing a total asset drain immediately preceding a criminal act of child abandonment constitutes clear financial abuse and malicious intent. It proves premeditation."

Sarah leaned back, a predatory smile appearing on her face. "Your parents are wealthy, aren't they, Clara?"

"My father owns a commercial real estate firm in Summerlin," I said. "My mother is on the board of several prominent charities. Their reputation is everything to them. It's the only thing they care about."

"Good," Sarah said, her eyes flashing. "Then we aren't just going to file a police report. We are going to file an emergency civil suit for emotional distress, grand theft by conversion, and punitive damages. I am going to freeze their commercial assets before the day is over."

Just then, my phone buzzed in my hand. It was an unknown number. I looked at Sarah, who nodded and hit the record button on her office phone system before gesturing for me to answer on speaker.

"Clara," my mother’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, airy, and completely devoid of remorse. "I see you’ve managed to find your way back to civilization. I hope you’ve learned your lesson. The desert is a cold place for a girl with no money and a sick child."

I squeezed my fists tight, letting Sarah’s calm presence anchor me. "You stole my money, Mom."

"We secured your assets, Clara," Eleanor corrected smoothly. "To ensure you make better choices. Return to the estate this evening. We will discuss the terms of your return, and we will arrange for Eli to be placed in a proper boarding academy where his... limitations can be managed. Do not be dramatic. We did this for your own good."

Sarah Lin smiled, silently mouthing the words: Got them.

"I’m not coming back, Eleanor," I said, using her first name for the first time in my life. "And you’re going to want to check your mail."

I hung up the phone.

"Beautiful," Sarah said, standing up and grabbing her briefcase. "She just admitted to financial coercion on a recorded line. Let’s go to court."
