Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead

Five years passed like a beautiful, serene dream.

I stood on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, the cool sea breeze whipping through my hair. Beside me stood Eli, now eleven years old, tall, confident, and carrying a sketchbook under his arm. He had developed a passion for drawing, filling pages with elaborate landscapes and fantasy creatures.

We had built a life of absolute peace, independence, and joy. My parents were still serving their sentences in Nevada, completely irrelevant to our lives. They had thought that leaving us on that frozen highway would be the end of our story. They thought they could erase us because they deemed us imperfect.

But their cruelty had only succeeded in burning away the old, fragile version of myself, leaving behind a woman who was unbreakable. They hadn't ended our story; they had simply forced me to write a better one.

"What are you thinking about, Mom?" Eli asked, looking up at me with his bright, intelligent eyes.

"Just thinking about how far we’ve walked," I said, putting my arm around his shoulders.

"We walked a long way," Eli agreed, looking out at the endless blue horizon where the ocean met the sky. "But the view is really good from here."

"The best," I whispered.

We turned away from the cliff side and walked back toward our warm, brightly lit house together, leaving the darkness of the past completely behind us, ready for whatever beautiful chapters lay ahead.
