Chapter 9 - The Healing Seasons

A year and a half after the night our world shattered, autumn settled over Seattle, painting the city in vibrant shades of gold and crimson.
Mark and I were sitting in the café after closing, wiping down tables in comfortable silence. He paused, tossing his rag over his shoulder, and looked at me with that same intense, protective gaze he had in the kitchen that terrible night—only this time, it was filled with warmth.
"You know," Mark said thoughtfully, "Lily has enough love to fill a stadium. But this café has a lot of empty chairs right now."
I paused, holding a stack of plates. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying," he walked over, wrapping his arms around my waist, "we have a lot of love left to give, Em. I think it’s time we started looking into adoption."
Tears pricked my eyes as a smile broke across my face. We had put our own plans for a family on hold for years, first to help Kate raise Lily, and then to navigate the fallout of the kidnapping.
"I would love that," I whispered, resting my forehead against his.
When we told Sarah and Lily the news a few weeks later, Lily was ecstatic.
"I'm going to have a cousin!" she squealed, jumping up and down in Sarah’s living room. "I'm going to teach them how to play soccer, and how to bake chocolate chip cookies without burning the bottoms like Uncle Mark does!"
"Hey, I only burned them once!" Mark protested, laughing as he scooped Lily up and spun her around the room.
The adoption process was rigorous, especially given my sister's criminal record, but our transparency, our standing in the community, and glowing character references from Sarah and Detective Miller paved the way.
Nine months later, we were matched with a two-year-old boy named Leo who needed a forever home. The first time Lily met him, she approached with a quiet reverence, holding out a stuffed bear she had picked out just for him.
Leo took the bear, flashing a shy, toothy grin, and Lily looked up at me with shining eyes.

"I'm going to be the best big cousin in the world," she declared.
Watching Lily take Leo by the hand and lead him toward the toy box, I realized that families are rarely built the way we expect them to be. They are forged in the fires of adversity, glued together by choice, grace, and relentless love.
