Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Forever

The sun sank lower, casting long, elegant shadows across the park as the afternoon rolled toward evening.

Other families began packing up their picnic baskets and calling their children toward the parking lot, but we stayed a little longer, lingering in the peaceful golden hour that seemed to stretch out just for us.

Brooklyn ran back over, panting slightly, her cheeks flushed with the crisp autumn air. "Mom, can we get ice cream on the way home? Vanilla with rainbow sprinkles?"

I laughed, looking over at Kevin, who raised his eyebrows in mock consideration.

"Only if we also get chocolate mousse cake," I teased gently.

Brooklyn scrunched up her nose in absolute disgust. "Ew, Mom! Nobody likes chocolate mousse cake anymore. That's for old people."

Kevin and I burst out laughing, the sound ringing out clear and bright into the open air.

"Agreed," I said, pulling both of my daughters close against my sides as we began the slow, happy walk back down the sidewalk toward home. "Old people food. Let's stick to ice cream."

As we walked up our driveway a few minutes later, the lights inside our house were already glowing warmly through the windows, casting a golden, welcoming welcome across the porch.

I unlocked the front door and pushed it open, stepping inside into a home filled with the scent of cinnamon candles, children's laughter, and unconditional love.

I paused on the threshold for just a second, looking back over my shoulder at the vast, star-lit sky stretching out endlessly across the horizon. The past was gone, buried beneath years of healing and the unshakeable strength of a mother who had fought through the fire to protect her children.

The storm had passed. The night was over.

And our forever had finally begun.
