Chapter 6 - Rebuilding on Solid Ground

The transition from a cramped, two-room apartment to the sprawling Vance Estate in the hills of New York was a dream that took months to fully sink in. The estate was a sanctuary of stone, glass, and ancient oaks, overlooking a private lake where the water was always calm and clear.

For the first few weeks, I found myself waking up in the middle of the night, panicking that I had overslept my shift at the bakery, or that the landlord was going to knock on the door demanding the rent I was short on. But every time I gasped awake, a pair of strong, warm arms would immediately pull me back against a broad chest.

"I'm here," Adrian would whisper into my hair, his breath warm against my neck. "You’re safe. We’re home."

By the third month, the anxiety began to fade, replaced by a quiet, steady peace.

Adrian did not want me to simply sit in the mansion and be a wife of leisure. He knew my mind, knew how hard I had worked to study business administration online during the late hours after Ellie went to sleep.

"I want you to head the Vance Foundation," he told me one morning over coffee on the terrace. He pushed a folder toward me. "It’s our philanthropic arm. We have a fifty-million-dollar annual budget dedicated to supporting single mothers, funding shelters, and providing legal aid to women who have been cut off by their families."

I looked at him, my eyes shining. "Adrian... this is exactly what I’ve always wanted to do."

"I know," he said, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand. "You survived the storm, Claire. Now, you get to be the lighthouse for everyone else still lost at sea."

While I threw myself into organizing the foundation, hiring a team of passionate advocates, and designing transitional housing programs, Adrian handled the final, lingering remnants of the Sterling name.

Arthur Sterling had tried to file a lawsuit for hostile takeover, but Adrian’s legal team dismantled it within days. The courts ruled the acquisition of Sterling Logistics entirely legal. Stripped of his company, his reputation, and his assets, Arthur was forced to take a low-level consulting job just to pay off his remaining creditors.

Lillian, unable to face the high-society circles that had once coddled her, fled the city. She was last rumored to be working as a sales associate at a mid-tier boutique in a different state, her dreams of marrying into the billionaire class shattered.

One afternoon, my former assistant at the bakery, Maya, called me.

"Claire! Oh my gosh, I saw you on the news!" Maya squealed. "You’re... you’re married to Adrian Vance? The guy who used to send those anonymous gourmet lunches to our breakroom?"

I laughed, a bright, bubbly sound. "Wait... Adrian sent those?"

"Of course he did!" Maya said. "We all knew some secret billionaire was watching over you. He used to have a security guard park across the street every night until you closed up. We just thought you had a very intense stalker!"

After we hung up, I confronted Adrian in his study. He was sitting behind his massive mahogany desk, looking over financial reports.

"You had a security guard watching me?" I asked, leaning against the doorframe with my arms crossed, a teasing smile on my lips.

Adrian looked up, his cheeks flushing slightly—a rare sight for the fearsome CEO. He cleared his throat. "The neighborhood where your bakery was located had a high crime rate at night. I couldn't be there personally every evening, Claire. I had to ensure you and Ellie got home safely."

I walked over, wrapping my arms around his neck from behind, burying my face in the crook of his shoulder. "You are ridiculous."

May you like

"I am protective," he corrected, turning his head to kiss my cheek. "And I love you."

"I love you too," I whispered.
