Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

The boardroom of Sterling Logistics was suffocatingly quiet.

Arthur Sterling sat at the head of the long mahogany table, his face pale and sunken. Beside him sat Evelyn, her expensive designer jewelry looking loud and garish against her tense, frightened posture. Lillian and Daniel sat opposite them. Daniel was sweating through his bespoke suit, his hands shaking as he stared at his phone, watching his own company’s stock tumble in association with the Sterling scandal.

"Where are they?" Evelyn hissed, checking her diamond-encrusted watch. "They were supposed to be here twenty minutes ago. They are doing this on purpose to humiliate us!"

"Shut up, Evelyn," Arthur snapped, rubbing his temples. He had aged ten years overnight. "We have no leverage. If Vance Global pulls our shipping routes permanently, we are bankrupt by Friday."

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Two tall, burly security guards in dark suits stepped in first, taking positions on either side of the entrance. Then came a line of lawyers, all carrying sleek leather briefcases.

And finally, Adrian Vance entered.

He wore a pristine navy three-piece suit that screamed absolute authority. But he didn't walk in alone. He held his arm out, and I stepped into the room beside him.

I wore a tailored, cream-colored pantsuit, my hair styled in elegant waves, my posture straight and proud. For five years, I had worn thrift-store clothes and faded jeans to protect my budget. Today, I looked every bit the queen Adrian always said I was.

Evelyn gasped, half-rising from her chair. "Claire! How dare you walk in here like—"

"Sit down, Evelyn," Adrian said. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer gravity of his tone slammed her back into her seat.

Adrian walked to the head of the table. A lawyer immediately pulled out a chair for me, and I sat down. Adrian remained standing, leaning his hands flat on the table, his eyes locking onto my father.

"As of 9:30 this morning," Adrian began, his voice echoing in the silent room, "Vance Global has acquired fifty-one percent of the outstanding shares of Sterling Logistics. We bought them from your panic-selling board members, who were more than happy to jump ship before the crash."

Arthur’s breath hitched. "Fifty-one percent... that’s..."

"A controlling interest," Adrian finished. "Which means, Arthur, this is no longer your company. It is mine. And by extension, it is Claire’s."

Lillian jumped up, her face twisted in a ugly grimace. "This is ridiculous! Claire doesn't know anything about logistics! She’s a dropout! She’s a failure who got pregnant by—"

"Lillian, sit down!" Daniel yelled, pulling his fiancée back. He looked at Adrian, his voice cracking. "Mr. Vance, please. My company, Vance-Daniel Imports, has a joint venture with Sterling Logistics. If this company goes under, my family’s business is ruined. I had nothing to do with what happened on the yacht! It was all them!"

"Daniel!" Lillian screamed, looking at her fiancé in horror. "How can you say that?"

"It’s the truth!" Daniel cried, desperate to save himself. "Your father pushed them! I just wanted my watch back!"

I looked at Daniel, the man my sister had bragged about for months. The 'powerful CEO' who was supposed to make my life look pathetic. He was groveling like a dog.

"Your watch, Daniel?" I asked softly, leaning forward. "The one you said cost more than I’d ever see in my life?"

Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet pouch. He tossed it onto the table. It slid across the mahogany, stopping right in front of Daniel.

"There is your watch," Adrian said. "My divers retrieved it from the harbor floor this morning. Along with some interesting cargo. It seems the Silver Horizon was carrying unregistered luxury goods in its lower hold. Smuggling, Arthur? In my harbor?"

Arthur’s face went from pale to completely grey. He looked as if he might have a heart attack. "Mr. Vance... please... we can reach an agreement."

"We already have," Adrian said. He signaled to his chief legal counsel.

The lawyer stepped forward, opening a folder and placing several documents in front of my father.

"These are the terms of your immediate termination," the lawyer explained. "You will surrender all company assets, including your corporate vehicle, your stock options, and the deed to the Sterling family estate, which was put up as collateral for your latest business loan. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the property."

"Evicted?" Evelyn shrieked, her voice reaching a dog-whistle pitch. "You are throwing us out of our home? Claire, I am your mother! I carried you for nine months!"

"And you threw my five-year-old daughter into a freezing ocean," I replied, my voice dropping to a whisper that cut through the room like a knife. "You stood there and smiled while she screamed. You told her to learn her place. Well, Mother... this is our place. And yours is on the street."

Adrian looked at the security guards. "Escort them out. They are trespassing on Vance Global property."

"No! You can't do this!" Lillian screamed as a guard firmly gripped her arm, guiding her toward the door. "Daniel, do something!"

But Daniel was already signing his own severance documents, refusing to even look at her.

My father stood up, his shoulders slumped, his eyes hollow. He looked at me, perhaps searching for a glimmer of the weak, compliant daughter he had bullied for years.

He found nothing but stone.

As they were escorted out, the doors heavy doors shut behind them, leaving a profound, beautiful silence in the room.

Adrian turned to me, his stern expression instantly melting into a warm, breathtaking smile. He walked over, kneeling beside my chair, and took both my hands in his.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

May you like

I took a deep breath, looking around the grand boardroom that had once intimidated me so much.

"I feel," I said, a tear of relief finally escaping my eye, "like I can finally breathe."
