Chapter 8 - Turning the Keys

Two weeks later, both houses were fully restored. I made a decision that surprised everyone, including my friends.

Instead of selling the Oakridge estate or moving back into my smaller home, I decided to keep both properties. I converted my original fire-repaired house into a dedicated community center and non-profit youth library, naming it The Arthur & Emma Foundation, offering after-school tutoring, warm meals, and shelter resources for children in need.

As for the Oakridge estate, Emma and I moved in permanently.

We completely remodeled the front porch where Emma had once sat cold and shivering in the rain. We tore down the dark concrete steps and replaced them with a wide, wrappings cedar deck equipped with warm outdoor heating lamps, comfortable velvet furniture, and vibrant flower boxes filled with yellow sunflowers—Emma’s favorite flower.

On our first official night living in the house as its true owners, I called Emma out to the new front deck.

I handed her a small, velvet-lined box.

She looked at me curiously before snapping the latch open. Inside lay a sleek electronic keycard, gold-plated and engraved with her name: EMMA ARTHUR MILLER - FOREVER HOME.

"This keycard unlocks every door on this property," I told her, kneeling down so I was eye-level with her. "Fingerprint scanner, keycard, or pass code—your birthday. No one will ever change these locks. No one can ever turn you away. This house belongs to you and me, today, tomorrow, and for as long as you live."

Emma traced her fingers over the shiny gold engraving, a bright, triumphant smile spreading across her face.
