Chapter 7 - The Legal Reckoning

By Monday morning, the Oakridge estate was silent.

My mother, Julian, and Sarah had completely cleared out their belongings over the weekend. Julian had signed over the title of his luxury vehicle, surrendered all shares in Sarah's business venture, and agreed to a court-ordered wages-garnishment plan that would return every single dollar—with interest—back into Emma’s college trust over the next seven years.

To avoid public prosecution and jail time, Julian had agreed to every single term without negotiation. Eleanor had moved into a small, one-bedroom rental apartment on the far side of town, funded entirely by her modest social security income. Her days of living in grand luxury at the expense of others were officially over.

When Richard Vance handed me the master keys to the Oakridge property, he smiled faintly. "Your father would be immensely proud of how you handled this," he said. "He always said you had his strength, even if you preferred to keep it hidden behind patience."

"I just wanted to protect my daughter," I replied, holding the shiny brass key in my palm.

"And you did," Richard said. "The house is entirely yours. Clear title, zero debt, total ownership."

I drove out to the estate alone that afternoon. The front door stood open to the crisp afternoon breeze. I walked through the grand foyer, past the high ceilings and the sweeping staircase. The house was empty, echoing with the faint memories of my childhood, but the heavy, oppressive atmosphere that Eleanor had created was completely gone.

I hired a team of locksmiths that very afternoon. Not to lock anyone out out of cruelty, but to install a modern, secure keyless entry system where Emma would never, ever have to worry about a key failing her again.
