Chapter 10 - A True Family Christmas

CHRISTMAS EVE: DECEMBER 24, 2027
Location: The Vance-Miller Home
Atmosphere: Warm, peaceful, filled with love.
One year after the nightmare in Columbus, the snow fell softly outside our home.
But inside, there was no coldness.
The living room was filled with the warm, golden glow of Christmas tree lights. A fire crackled in the fireplace, casting dancing shadows on the walls. The air smelled of fresh pine, cinnamon, and roasting vanilla.
There was no crowd of snobbish neighbors. There were no false smiles, no performative grief, and no hidden agendas.
It was just us.
David sat on the floor near the tree, helping Lily assemble a complex lego set. Lily was laughing, her face bright with pure happiness. She wore a soft, comfortable red fleece pajama set, her movements free and easy.
I walked into the living room, carrying three mugs of hot cocoa topped with mountain-sized piles of whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles.
"Cocoa delivery!" I announced.
"Yay!" Lily cheered, carefully placing her lego pieces down and scrambling up to take her mug. "Thank you, Mommy!"
David stood up, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder as we watched Lily happily sip her hot drink.
"You okay?" he whispered in my ear.
"I am perfect," I said, and for the first time in my life, I meant it with every fiber of my being.
I looked at the small, framed photograph of my father, Arthur, sitting on our mantelpiece. It was surrounded by warm fairy lights and green holly leaves. In the photo, he was smiling, his eyes kind and peaceful.
I had run far enough, just as he had told me to. I had built my own life, protected my daughter, and found the unconditional love I had always deserved.
As the clock struck midnight, bringing in Christmas Day, Lily looked up at us, her mouth covered in whipped cream.
"Merry Christmas, Mommy. Merry Christmas, Daddy."

"Merry Christmas, sweetheart," we said together.
Outside, the Ohio winter was cold and unforgiving. But inside our home, there was only warmth, safety, and a love that would never burn.
