Chapter 6 - Clearing the Chaos

Evelyn and Kimberly scrambled to gather their scattered belongings like a pair of defeated generals retreating from a lost war. Kimberly muttered curses under her breath, tossing Chloe’s art supplies back onto the floor with a final petulant heave, though Lucas immediately stepped forward and scooped them up himself.
Within twenty minutes, the moving truck parked outside revved its engine and lumbered away from the curb, carrying the dashed hopes of Kimberly’s free-loading scheme.
The apartment grew quiet again, save for the faint sound of soft sniffling coming from the guest bathroom down the hall.
Lucas let out a long, exhausted sigh, running a hand through his hair. He looked tired, older than his years, but there was a profound sense of relief in his eyes. He looked at me, his expression full of apology and deep affection.
“I am so, so sorry, Elena,” Lucas murmured, walking over to me and wrapping his arms gently around my shoulders. “I should have put my foot down with them years ago. I let my mother’s toxic attitude linger because I thought she would eventually change. I never imagined they would have the audacity to come here and do this to Chloe.”
I leaned into his embrace, letting the tension slowly drain out of my muscles. “Thank you for standing up to them, Lucas. That was long overdue.”
“It’s not just about standing up to them,” he said, pulling back to look me in the eye. “It’s about protecting our family. Come on, let’s go check on our girl.”
We walked down the hallway together and gently pushed open the bathroom door. Chloe was sitting on the edge of the bathtub, her knees pulled up to her chest, looking warily toward the door. When she saw it was just Lucas and me, her shoulders slumped in relief.
“Are they gone?” Chloe asked in a small voice.
“They are gone, sweetie,” I said, kneeling in front of her and taking her small hands in mine. “They are completely gone, and they are never doing that to you again. I promise.”
Lucas sat down beside her on the edge of the tub, pulling her into a warm, protective hug. “Your mom and I are so sorry you had to go through that today, kiddo. This is your room, your home, and nobody—absolutely nobody—is ever taking it away from you.”

Chloe hugged her father back fiercely, a small smile finally breaking through her tear-streaked face. “Can we go put my drawings back?”
“We can do better than that,” Lucas smiled, standing up and holding out a hand. “Let’s order your favorite pizza and redecorate your entire room however you want this weekend. On me.”
