Chapter 9 - New Beginnings

By the time autumn arrived, our lives had settled into a beautiful, quiet rhythm. The toxic shadow that had hung over our marriage for nearly a decade had completely lifted.
Thomas and I found a renewed depth in our relationship. Without the silent tension of his mother's disapproval hanging between us, we talked more, laughed more, and felt closer than we had since our early twenties. He had taken a position as a senior partner at his firm, giving him more flexible hours to be home for dinner every night.
In October, Thomas came home carrying a large envelope.
"What's that?" I asked, looking up from the kitchen table where I was helping Mia with her reading homework.
"It's a deed," Thomas said, a broad smile spreading across his face. He laid the papers on the table. "Dad and I made a deposit today. We bought forty acres of land up near the lake."
I gasped. "The lake plot you’ve been talking about for years?"
"We're going to build a family cabin," Thomas said, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind. "A big one. With a porch that overlooks the water, a massive kitchen, and plenty of room for all the kids. A place where we can spend every holiday, every summer, every weekend... together."
Mia looked up from her book, her eyes wide. "Will there be snow there in the winter, Daddy?"
"Loads of snow, sweetheart," Thomas chuckled, leaning down to kiss her cheek. "Enough to make a million paper snowflakes and real ones too."
"And Grandpa can have a workshop in the barn!" Noah shouted, running into the kitchen with a soccer ball under his arm.

"He's already designed the blueprint for it," Thomas smiled.
For the first time in years, the future felt entirely ours. There were no secrets waiting to be exposed, no conditional invitations, no cruel whispers under the breath. We were building something permanent, rooted in honesty, loyalty, and unconditional love.
