Chapter 5 - Echoes of the Past

The drive home was quiet, save for the soft sound of Christmas carols on the radio, which Thomas eventually turned off. Mia fell asleep ten minutes into the ride, her small head leaning against Noah’s shoulder. Noah stayed awake, staring out the window at the passing streetlights, his small face serious and thoughtful.

When we arrived home, our house was dark and quiet. It was small compared to Sharon’s sprawling estate, but as I stepped through the front door, the familiar scent of pine and cinnamon welcomed us. Here, there were no hidden snubs, no passive-aggressive comments, no conditional love.

Thomas carried Mia straight upstairs to her bed, gently taking off her red dress and slipping her into her favorite unicorn pajamas. I tucked Noah into his bed.

"Mom?" Noah asked as I pulled the comforter up to his chin.

"Yes, buddy?"

"Did Grandma really think Mia wasn't Daddy's girl?"

I sat on the edge of his bed, running my fingers through his hair. "Grandma had some bad thoughts in her heart, Noah. Sometimes grown-ups let anger and jealousy make them say things that aren't true."

"Well, she's wrong," Noah said firmly, turning onto his side. "Mia has Daddy's toes. They both have that weird crooked second toe. Everyone knows that."

I couldn't help but laugh softly—a genuine, healing laugh that broke the tension lingering in my chest. "You're right, Noah. Everyone knows that."

Downstairs, I found Thomas sitting at the kitchen island, two mugs of hot tea sitting untouched between his hands. The lab results were spread out on the counter before him.

"I called my lawyer on the drive," Thomas said as I sat down beside him.

"Your lawyer? On Christmas night?"

"I left a voicemail on his emergency line," Thomas clarified, looking up at me. "I'm modifying my will on Monday. Sharon was listed as a secondary executor and trustee for the kids' trust funds if anything happened to us. I'm removing her completely. I'm also drafting a formal notice of no-contact."

I looked at my husband, seeing the profound pain behind his eyes. Cutting off a parent isn't an easy victory; it’s a surgical amputation required to save the rest of the body.

"Are you sure, Thomas?" I asked quietly. "Your dad... Melanie..."

"Dad called me while I was putting Mia to bed," Thomas said, his voice thick with emotion. "He was crying, Sarah. In forty years, I have never heard my father cry. He told me he had no idea Sharon had been faking records and telling people you were unfaithful. He thought we were just distant because of your work schedule. He apologised to me... and he told me he was moving into the guest room."

I blinked, surprised. Lawrence had spent forty years accommodating Sharon’s every demand, acting as the peacekeeper in a house ruled by an iron fist.

"What about Melanie?"

"Melanie sent a text," Thomas said, flipping his phone screen toward me.

The message read: I am so, so sorry. I didn't know Mom was saying those things to Mia. I thought it was just regular mother-in-law tension. I feel sick. Please let me see the kids when things cool down.

"The truth is out, Sarah," Thomas said, taking my hand and pressing it to his cheek. "The lie kept her in power for six years. Now that everyone knows the truth, her castle is falling down. But I don't care about her castle anymore. I only care about this house."
