Chapter 6 - The Reckoning of Eleanor

The morning sun rose over the Greenwich estate, but there was no warmth in the light. The grand iron gates that had once stood as a symbol of the Vance family’s exclusive wealth were now chained shut, adorned with a large, yellow foreclosure notice from the sheriff’s department.
Inside the mansion, the grand hallway was a battlefield of cardboard boxes and half-packed suitcases. Eleanor Vance sat on a velvet sofa, surrounded by her expensive paintings and porcelain vases, her eyes red and puffy. She looked ten years older than she had just a week ago.
"We can't leave this behind, Julian!" Eleanor wailed, gesturing to a massive crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling. "That was imported from France! It’s worth sixty thousand dollars!"
"We don't own it anymore, Mother," Julian said, his voice flat and dead. He was throwing his clothes into a duffel bag, not even bothering to fold them. "The court order says we can only take personal effects. Clothes, toiletries, and family photos. Everything else belongs to the estate. It belongs to Claire."
"She’s a monster!" Eleanor screamed, slamming her fist against the sofa arm. "A vindictive, cruel monster! How could she do this to us? After everything we did for her!"
"What did we do for her, Mother?" Julian suddenly asked, stopping what he was doing and looking at his mother with a hollow, haunted expression. "We treated her like garbage. We mocked her. You pushed her down the stairs—"
"I didn't push her!" Eleanor gasped, her face turning pale. "She slipped! It was an accident!"
"You stood there and smiled!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing in the empty, cavernous house. "I saw the security footage, Mother! Claire’s lawyers subpoenaed the home security server. I saw what you did. You watched her fall, and you didn't even call 911. You left her there until the housekeeper found her an hour later!"
Eleanor shrank back into the sofa, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "I... I didn't think... I thought she was just faking it to get attention..."
"She was pregnant with my child!" Julian cried, tears finally spilling over his eyes. "My only child! The only child I will ever have! And you killed it! You killed my family, Mother! You killed my future!"
Before Eleanor could answer, the heavy oak front doors opened.
Two sheriff’s deputies stepped inside, followed by Evelyn Hayes and a team of professional movers.
"Time’s up, Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," the deputy said, his hand resting on his utility belt. "The eviction order is active as of noon. You need to vacate the premises immediately."
"Please, just one more hour!" Eleanor pleaded, grabbing her purse and clutching it to her chest. "I need to pack my jewelry!"
"Your jewelry was purchased using corporate funds from Vance Development during a period of insolvency," Evelyn Hayes said, stepping forward with a calm, professional demeanor. "A temporary restraining order has been placed on those items. You may leave with the clothes on your back and your personal identification. Nothing else."
"No! You can't do this!" Eleanor screamed, scrambling to her feet. "This is my house! I am Eleanor Vance!"
"Not anymore," Evelyn said coldly. "Movers, begin."
Julian didn't fight. He picked up his single duffel bag, walked past his mother’s hysterical screams, and stepped out onto the driveway.
Waiting near the gate was Chloe. She wasn't wearing her silk robes or her designer jewelry anymore. She was dressed in sweatpants, her face pale and anxious.
"Julian!" she cried, running to him. "The police... they came to my apartment! They said they’re going to indict me for fraud! You have to help me! You have to pay my bail!"
Julian looked at her, his eyes entirely devoid of emotion. This was the woman he had betrayed his wife for. This was the woman he had laughed with while Claire lay in a pool of blood on their staircase.
"I don't have any money, Chloe," Julian said quietly. "I don't even have a place to sleep tonight."
"But... but you're Julian Vance!" Chloe stammered, stepping back. "You must have a secret account! Some offshore money!"
"It’s all gone," Julian said. "Claire took everything. And she had every right to."
May you like
He walked past her, out of the gates, and down the long, winding road toward the highway. He didn't look back at the mansion, nor did he stop when he heard the sirens approaching to arrest Chloe.
He was entirely, utterly alone.
